Faith!

That single moment changed his life forever

there on his second tour of duty

thought he was hardened to atrocities of war

even when facing his own death

another demolished village came up ahead

more wounded and many dead!

On the road came upon a woman crouching

holding a man’s lifeless body

two small children wandering dazed and  lost

each cried with endless tears

looking down in body armour and loaded gun

under the searing heat of the sun!

Feeling himself overwhelmed with the scene

had not been to church for years

his faith was now being tested himself a father

a beautiful wife waiting at home

safe away from such brutality of this warfare

their torment for a time did share!

Made him confront his own vulnerability and belief

feeling that overwhelming grief!

Then became a soldier once more and moved on!

Unholy Beasts!

The vicar stood at the entrance to his church

was confronted by the body

of a woman a cross had pierced her heart

he did not recognise her

the silver cross he knew was from the altar

his faith did briefly falter!

He was sure only half an hour ago he saw it

checked within it had gone

tried to phone the authorities really shaken

the phone line only crackled

returned the body was no longer laying there

at the blood could only stare!

The sun beat down as the church clock chimed

striking twelve midday

looked around at the many neat rows of graves

something caught his eye

bravely walking towards this small object

nearing it stood erect!

Looked like a gargoyle an ancient inhuman beast

the female body lay torn apart

the silver cross flung aside blood spattered

retreating it sped away

from this position he could see many more

an infestation could not ignore!

Tightly holding his bible he had been carrying

went into the sanctuary

of his church slamming forcefully the oak door

heard quiet  gentle talking

a couple sat admiring the carvings unconcerned

as he approached turned!

Smiling as a young woman joined them worried

her friend she could not find

the vicar heard what she said regrettably knew

where had they come from

high-pitched screeching spoilt the tranquillity

as he felt the encroaching hostility!

Remembering work had just started on the crypt

in the basement of the church

why did they leave him alone could not figure

the family stood disturbed

would have to tell them the truth and confide

what was massing outside!

Whatever these abominable manifestations were

there seemed no escape

tears were heavy at hearing a friend had expired

noise increased panic grew

clear they could not cross the church’s holy line

he needed a divine sign!

Were these sent here from satan’s nefarious domain

before the simple altar he prayed

afraid this was the beginning of man’s final stand

the family knelt in veneration

at the same moment each felt the slight tremor

which soon became a roar!

Items fell from around the ancient parish church

books magazines pews tipped

then above their heads the large cross crashed

in front of them staying upright

the face of Christ was at their eye level glowing

at that moment faith flowing!

Everything went still a calm was now restored

standing in unison they hugged

the vicar made his way to the door opening it

walking into the chilly air

a layer of white clouds covered the blue sky

he raised his arms up high!

He could heard a soft voice calling out for help

looking around the headstones

saw lots of scorch marks then nothing else

then the young woman

who had been butchered found sat on a seat

clothed but with bare feet!

She smiled brightly as her friend approached

faded into the surroundings

they all had witnessed this wonderful sight

a bond between them grown

they left in peace promising to come back

with her family and memorial plaque!

The vicar watched them go united in reverence

what they had experienced was intense!

Their lives had been changed forever!

Moment Of Relief!

That smile filled with a moment of relief

the journey long and arduous

from the horrors of war and occupation

tears gushed tension released

remembering the loss of their relations

now seeking new foundations!

Torn from the life they knew and loved

persecuted treated poorly

shattered lives forced to witness cruelty

and unspeakable acts

memories that would never be deleted

together never more defeated!

Both young and hopeful the couple gazed

from the ships upper deck

slowing as it entered the busy harbour

in their new homeland

gaunt and battle weary they embraced

as together the future faced!

Intruder?

By their appearance together they were happy

even though a short period

had passed romance had certainly evolved

both well-known personalities

in their chosen careers each had excelled

high respect for both held.

It could not be predicted what happened

the night before saint valentines

in the early hours awful screams heard

followed by four gunshots

and sirens disturbing the still night air

start of the tragic affair!

Emergency services entered a fatal scene

inside the luxury home

a trail of blood and a dead young woman

shot in the man’s arms

the search for the truth would now begin

in a tragedy none could win!

The circumstances to this horrendous death

would become complex

the scene did not look right to the trained eye

even to hardened officers

the brutality caused by the shells extreme

silent now that terrified scream!

Once the victim and suspect were removed

and evidence was gathered

the large house lay empty the only witness

silent with no voice to tell

unlikely the true facts would be revealed

now ever more within sealed!

The young woman could not tell her story

the accused living in unholy glory!

Was there honestly an intruder?

The Question!

That question pounds in my brain

why did I not act sooner

that odd scruffy man walked by me

but why would I suspect

that he had just shot my only friend

not being there to defend!

Will never lose that awful first glimpse

turning into his front gate

he was lying motionless we had talked

only a few minute before

no detectable raised tone in his speech

to my trusting ears did reach!

What struck me was how quiet and empty

the houses and street

being early morning residents must be in

surely there would be noise

arousing suspicions of this terrible event

an act of criminal intent!

That moment the police arrived escapes me

must have been in shock

not able to comprehend who would do it

but even then it looked

a well organised killing the only witness

myself adding to the stress!

Even at that early stage it had to be a hit

though this was absurd

how was this possible just working lads

but maybe I was not privy

to every secret of my childhood friend

hidden events in the end?

Gave the vague description of the suspect

to the detective inspector

who seemed unimpressed at the photo fit

nothing else could be added

later assisted the family to bury their son

something that had to be done!

Ten years on the  question always remains

why did I not act sooner

though as far as the evidence was gathered

the only explanation found

it was professionally planned and executed

this was no longer disputed!

But no motive has yet been discovered!
