Barn Owls!

Warm and dry with just a gentle breeze

the short hike to the farm exhilarating

here alone to watch the barn owls fly

hoping to see them swoop for their prey

trying to be quiet and unobtrusive

but knew that large eyes were watching

far above the tops of thick leaved trees

a sudden faint sound made me freeze!

At first two tiny dots in the cloudy sky

that circled the small wooded clearing

in a spiralling descent at each rotation

they came closer such a majestic sight

their screeching louder by the second

nearing me they hissed an eerie sound

like phantoms from another dimension

coming at speed that got my attention!

Certainly not wanting to be their quarry

even as they swooped up small rodents

the precision was breath-taking to watch

in a flash ascended back into the beyond

like ghosts questioned if it had been reality

leaving me in a state of utter ambivalence

these images on my digital camera captured

for the first time my whole being raptured!

The Tattered Flag!

On the edge of an open field hung the tattered flag

the only indication of the battle

long forgotten the torment of lost innocence

or names of the fallen soldiers

one more conflict where nothing had been won

there a feeling of death still hung!

Bodies buried in shallow graves where each fell

young lives ended in torment

grass now covered the site and sheep grazed

where restless souls still roam

no cannon or musket fire nor smell of cordite

as two armies clash in the fight!

Silence is what greets the visitor to this field

pleasant during daylight hours

as the shadows lengthen a mist hangs low

and voices have been heard

crying out longingly on the endless breeze

rustling the grass and trees!

The tattered flag blows proudly in its salute

to those nameless soldiers

from long ago whose spirits will never leave

all those families of the fallen

remember their ancestors ultimate sacrifice

in war a cruel and futile device!

The tattered flag remains as a remembrance!

Winter Snow!

High in the mountains lay a small logging town

that during the summer months

crews were active cutting down the old tall trees

then quickly transporting them

either by river or trucks off the mountainside

working hard for profit and pride!

This was until winter snow set in and cut it off

from the rest of the country

as rivers froze and all roads were impassable

it became a small ghost town

the permanent residence of sixty-five souls

much easier for the sheriffs patrols!

A tough fifty-five year old widow father of three

two daughter’s lived in the city

the eldest was his deputy making a good team

at home in the desolate wilderness

knowing trouble could erupt any help distant

but fugitives would meet resistance!

Legends of the Sasquatch and ghosts haunting

this vast inhospitable wildness

never really bothered these officers of the law

until the first body was found

kneeling head bowed as if  they were praying

terror on their face displaying!

Over several weeks more bodies were discovered

exactly the same in different areas

very perplexing there were no  physical marks

on any of the eight bodies

none were local all were male of varying  ages

decomposition at different stages!

Out of their depth called on detectives from the city

who were also baffled at this case

no clues nor tracks were anywhere close at hand

the only course of action watch

risky as there was no indication of what it could be

in the snow and each pine tree!

The autopsies showed they died from heart attacks

these fit young males scared to death

the conclusion of the coroner nothing else was found

help could only be flown there

as an atmosphere of uncertainty and panic spread

why so many strangers found dead?

The sheriff and his trusty deputy and six city cops

made their way into the mountains

uncertain where to position the limited numbers

to seek out what they knew not

the temperature dropped the snow began to fall

their enthusiasm began to stall!

Being police officers expected a rational solution

even with the lack of evidence

gathered in the area where  corpses discovered

from there in pairs spread out

for the nights vigil hoping it could be resolved

and causes of deaths solved!

With cloudy skies and increasing heavy snowfall

wishing they were in a warm place

hoping the riddle could finally be settled tonight

through the bad weather and foliage

a blue pulsating haze formed coming their way

to their rapidly increasing dismay!

Within this mesmerizing haze there seemed to be

a grotesque beast metamorphosing

before their vision the deputy turned her gaze

contacting the others not to stare

static was all that came through no human voices

what now thinking her choices?

A groan from close by had her running she knew

it was her dad he was alive

awful ear-splitting sounds came made her feel sick

reaching the crumpled figure

kneeling grabbing him with all the will power

she could muster as it had gone sour!

Stumbling and falling in the deepening soft snow

exhausted reached the jeep

the phenomena no longer was anywhere in sight

soon heading back to their office

to report what had occurred soon reaching base

knowing this was a classified case

Once back in the warm and familiar surroundings

felt better but deeply shaken

after contacting the police headquarters waited

for the reinforcements to come

they knew the military were alerted to investigate

there was little time to contemplate!

What was this frightening and unknown apparition

this would be their dominating mission!

Stone Slab

There the large stone slab does stand

reading Lydiard Fields.

Where once the land was undisturbed

for centuries nature lived.

Unsullied all living things there thrived

without threat strived.

Now all that remains of what had been

as every trace of natures gifts.

Were torn apart by human intervention

no conscience or care!

Heavy machinery brought in to clear

trees and grass disappear!

Natural beauty and elements obliterated

man’s imprint firmly showing.

Changing the landscape with structures

that deface and spoil the view.

Species  lost for our future generations

with these digressing alterations!

The once country setting has long gone

replaced by a hotel and units.

That avenue of trees and open meadows

a mere distant memory.

Token vegetation is  now sparsely planted

to late for decisions to be recanted!

These ugly monuments surrounding our vision

will forever cause division!

Hikers!

The hikers were beginning to find it very tough

as the forest became more dense

some of them experienced others the first trip

some wished they had not come

trees were whispering and in unison moved

their presence was not approved!

They were tiring as the undergrowth thickened

now all the tracks were covered

not taking long to realise they were trapped

every way looked the same

underfoot was becoming boggy and deep

the ground becoming steep!

Sloping down to a foul-smelling putrid pond

with animal tracks going in

they were being directed right to its edge

branches started breaking

from the tops of huge trees it got closer

conditions getting grosser!

Bunching up at the edge the bank crumbling

a dark object swimming

around as if this was waiting for them to fall in

giving way with their weight

tipping a hiker into the water covered slime

consumed in her prime!

So rapid no sounds were heard just the blood

changing the colour red

the rest did manage to grab thick twines

jumping to firmer ground

scrambling amongst the thick vegetation

beasts intent on their damnation!

Each hiker succumbing to overwhelming odds

several broke free and ran

not caring about injuries at their skin ripping

on thorns and sharp branches

not a soul heard their dying or begging pleas

as the last died in the trees!

The forest kept its secrets no witnesses to tell!

where now do their bodies dwell!

Dog Walk!

She had got into the routine each evening

since getting her dog.

A chance to exercise after a day at work

living alone wasn’t good.

It was lovely having a companion and pet

contentment had been met.

Everything was well when she at last got home

the puppy ready for his walk.

So as usual changed into more casual ware

and off they happily went.

To the nearby community woodland park

by now it was getting dark.

Far later than they usually came now uncertain

about entering the trees.

It had taken on a completely foreboding feel

once within the boundaries.

Sadness consumed her being upon each tread

as she looked ahead!

Following the sound of her excited pets bark

saw a man by a tall elm.

Her dog was scratching at its base and roots

acting like he wasn’t there!

As she drew near there was no  man in sight

could he be in some plight?

Uncertain who he was or could be the threat

got hold of her precious pet.

Putting on his lead so would not run off again

curious why he was digging.

Never done that before while they were here

but too dark to see clear!

Hurrying back home weary of him following

on the path easier to see.

Relieved as she got in safely both unharmed

then contacted the police.

Early the next day they came around to visit

suggestion better she sit!

Informing her that where the dog was digging

a body had been found.

It had been established the remains were male

and not been there long!

To her that was who she saw standing so sad

remembering feeling so bad!

Giving her statement the best that she could

knowing they wouldn’t believe her!

That it was a Ghost!

Near A Fiery Star!

Amongst the green trees and electric pylons

major roads and hotels stand

in the once rural unspoilt countryside

when there was no traffic to speed

only imagining the peace beauty now lost

at natures mighty cost!

Skies above once unpolluted with chemicals

no man-made flying craft

clouds move across the darkening future

another bad summer ebbs away

as human lives slip by almost unnoticed

our reality could be easily missed!

Relaxing in a quiet place where fields once lay

as man dominates more land

greed of the few causes problems for the many

where love and respects gone

envy violence does engulf the passing bystander

just wanting to peacefully meander!

Always at risk from human stupidity and blunders

many living in constant fear

spirituality is weak the communications lacking

between cultures where’s the humanity

sitting here where once open meadows existed

fresh unspoilt life where man coexisted!

There must come a point when mankind goes too far

on a small planet near a fiery star!
