Excited!

The couple were excited their own home

a new house on a small estate

though near to a large countryside park

falling in love with its design

tranquil surroundings away from traffic

used to town hustle and bustle

but it was surprisingly cheap for location

then had no doubts on arrival

pulling up outside in hired furniture van

she saw a suspicious man!

 

Decided not to mention it to her husband

sure the light was dim

as the sun was very low in the evening sky

just happy to be here

covertly looked around nobody was there

soon forgot the sighting

they decided to unpack the following day

now wanted to play!

 

Breathed in the sweat smelling relaxing air

unable to get any sleep

walked along the fence of the vast park

heard animals in the distance

so different here still unsure of their move

saw a bright orb hovering

ahead darting about as if it was observing

soon became unnerving!

 

Those first feelings of belonging had faded

more orbs came into view

hugged each other every sound magnified

both could not understand

why it was deserted the houses in darkness

running back to the van

now in their brains just thoughts of escape

as ahead loomed a shape!

 

It was a few hours later when a police officer

spotted on a routine patrol

the furniture van doors open abandoned

no sign of any occupants

a search of the area was quickly instigated

and the occupants identified

creating a major enigma for investigation

as the story broke to the nation!

 

On that small rural housing estate discovered

all the people had disappeared

within a short time frame gone without trace

what had happened in this place?

Marks!

It was a new experience living in tranquil peace

of the countryside no traffic or neighbours

retired from the city of violence and corruption

he awoke that first day mid-morning

no longer on the tube heading for his office nice

to retire and have a life great advice!

 

The downside recently divorced an expensive time

yet was glad the dog came to

always got on better with Betsy his beloved Alsatian

who had been noisy in the night

after loudly barking had then joined him on the bed

on his pillow placed her head!

 

Too  tired to be roused or concerned with her warning

but surprised at the whimpering

that made him sense she had been scared by something

sitting up she jumped down

gave him that look to follow with trepidation complied

where was she guiding him felt petrified!

 

The pure air and landscape hit was a wonderful feeling

this was short lived as Betsy guided him

to his SUV where the damage to the bonnet was clear

deep gouged marks had ripped it apart

she snarled from a distance but would not go near

what formidable entity was living here?

 

At this moment I stand next to Betsy on his cell phone

recording the image and words as proof

that something fearsome co-existed in the wilderness

there were no tracks on the ground

nor signs or sounds that could give him any evidence

that feeling of being watched grew more intense!

 

The badly damaged phone was found by a friend

concerned he could not make contact

an intense search was carried out of the vast area

nothing was found of the man or dog

though the locals knew the legend of the beast

that upon flesh it did seek to feast!

 

Or could there be an even deeper unsolved mystery?

Forming!

From the gentle clear blue sky

it changed in an instance

angry red clouds were forming

a crescendo of loud booms

shook the ground beneath me

yet nowhere to flee!

 

No longer that peaceful haven

familiar places burnt

searing and incandescent heat

choking smoke displaced

that sweet exhilarating pure air

in the blinding glare!

 

From a tranquil picturesque scene

into an image of a hell

no warning of impending conflict

upon this scorched earth

life eradicated profuse projectiles

of deadly nuclear missiles!

 

Then darkness filled the heavens

the survivors cowered

most dying of radiation poisoning

as the cycle had started

on a human race that never learned

the ancient planet still turned!

 

Those who had instigated Armageddon

the selected few hid below

in large underground secure cities

feeling safe and detached

from the carnage upon the surface

eradication of the human race!

Neighbour!

How quiet without his neighbour anymore

though they had been ill

it was not a shocked when she passed away

strange noises again he heard

to him unsettling because nobody was there

not that he was aware!

 

Relations came to clear out all her belongings

yet something still remained

nearly a year before the house had been sold

a couple bought the place

glad for the company but certainly not to go in

sensed bad things about to begin!

 

Always weary of the seemingly nice old lady

neighbours for many years

yet never went into her house too afraid

often could see a man lurking

yet she had never been married that he knew

had left a nefarious residue!

 

Even the thought of noises he had listened to

made his chest feel very tight

never found out the cause of the loud chants

or emanating screams of terror

called the police who just ignored his concern

made his stomach churn!

 

After several calls did come to speak with her

but did not go inside

from then on it got worse heard a man’s voice

as if knowing he complained

many nights lay listening in fear of his sanity

and the blasphemous profanity!

 

His conscience would no longer let him rest

must tell them of the neighbour

knocked on the door wondering what to say

at first there was no reply

then the door opened the old lady stared back

he collapsed with a heart attack!

 

Only a short time later the couple returned home

aghast to find him deceased

with no idea of dead eyes watching them both

later they entered their house

the door still locked to them all was tranquil

until a presence they could feel!

 

That night the screams and awful noises began!
