Ghost Train!

A lone car had to stop at the rail crossing

as the safety gates closed

bells rang and lights flashed on and off

she sat waiting to get home

in the distance down the single track

it passed a rail side shack!

Anxiously thinking why such a long wait

then Annie felt the vibration

her daughter Ella cried in her car seat

as a dark shape approached

speeding by them was an old express train

from screaming could not refrain!

Ella was silent they were both mesmerized

the barriers stayed down

then the scheduled train trundled through

what had they seen

barriers now rose how glad to move on

in her mind the image strong!

Annie was certain they had seen a ghost train

determined to find out more and come again!

Regret!

Regret the only word he could think of at the time

hidden in the deep military bunker

risking his thoughts being read by the computers

doubting the technology advances

he had created to combat the android revolution

that was now part of our evolution!

Even as the inventor began to think it was crazy

to have created these robotics

but being under orders had to complete this task

finding the answer how to out smart

superior machines created by man’s God complex

their creation had upon all put a hex!

Down in the deep bunker in his sophisticated lab

knew this would not be safe for long

could hear the explosions rapidly becoming louder

secure computers would be hacked

his software had been tested on human subjects

classed by his masters as rejects!

Within the hour alarms rang out in the complex

security arrived said time to go

communication systems immediately shut down

running through escape tunnels

quickly made their way to a high-speed bullet train

their lives desperately trying to retain!

A split second later the whole base was disintegrated

the androids had not killed their mark

unable to eliminate him yet certain software erased

yet this too had also been rescued

so the war would intensify their superiority had ended

into unknown depths humanity descended!

The conflict between man and machine entered a new phase!

Soldier!

He sat alone in the train compartment

it was during war-time

the soldier was on leave from the army

had witnessed the abhorrence

of warfare and his friends lives ended

their funerals attended!

As he sat deep in thought became aware

in the seat opposite

by the window a frail looking woman sat

weeping very quietly

gasped certain nobody else was in there

this compartment to share!

The light was poor as it was the black out

how cold he now felt

sound of bombs dropping in the distance

already very stressed

could only stare at his unexpected visitor

that he could not ignore!

There was nowhere for him to run away

a no corridor train

on this old trundling commuter train

he was stuck here

did not fancy jumping onto the line

this decided to decline!

But suddenly the shape distorted

the face became clear

now saw the black eyes glaring

the once human features

changed into a grotesque outline

his sanity unable to define!

A loud scream like a banshee wail

made him reel away

running to the left locked door

pounding the glass

as it smashed his flesh was torn

shouting as if others to warn!

The train slowly screeched to a halt

station staff ran to his aid

upper body lay over the broken door

they helped him out

in the carriage nobody else was there

to them an odd affair!

Later in hospital his wounds tended

he was unconscious

eventually when he was able to speak

nothing could he recall

but in his mind the image did remain

thought was he going insane?

From then on felt a vile presence near!

Before Me!

There before me she sat all alone

on the station platform

nobody else was about to be seen

so pretty yet a sad stare

was distracted as the train neared

glancing back had disappeared!

A tightening of my stomach retching

such pain overcame me

distressing images in my mind’s eye

of an endless despair

on that empty platform standing alone

feelings never before known!

There was no train had been imagination

for a few seconds saw

below on the line the body of the woman

then she was gone

shaken became rational once again

so came a real train!

Leaving that place the memory has remained

lingering impressions stayed

was it the restless spirit of a suicide victim

caught in that fatal moment

forever etched on the fabric of the location

was my only explanation!

To this day the images still haunt me!

Christmas Home Coming!

End of the first year of her university course

now it was Christmas holidays

excited to be going home to see mum and dad

her big sister would be there to

dad said he would pick her up from the station

filled with festive anticipation!

Tried to phone home that day but got no reply

getting on the train so worried

the normally quick trip slow in this demeanor

unable to comprehend a reason

she could see that there was nobody waiting

phoning her friend now debating!

A hug from her best mate glad to see somebody

they headed home in a car

approaching the road became aware of no lights

pulling up outside was fearful

of what she would find when opening the door

turning the key in the lock unsure!

Tried the light switch but there was no power

the street light gave some illumination

made their way to the cupboard in the hallway

where the fuse box was situated

a torch was on the top checking fuses were fine

the electric switched off by design!

With the house illuminated everything was tidy

so neat her mums handy work

as if it had been prepared for her home-coming

checked the bedrooms perfect

what was happening had thoughts of slaying

or kidnap nerves fraying!

Enquired with neighbours said they heard noises

went around knocked on the door

nobody replied then called the police concerned

but when they came all was quiet

now ready to tear out her hair fearing the worst

in her mind came a word cursed!

In the lounge the christmas tree stood in the corner

presents spread around the base

decorations lovingly placed cards hanging over string

just as she had waited to come and see

dad was a history teacher who enjoyed Egyptology

specialising in anthropology!

He had been on several archeological study trips

and brought back several artifacts

the thought of this made sense but was terrified

a smell of mould made them both

felt nauseous then she remembered the basement

were none of her family went!

But now there was no other choice it held the key

holding each other for comfort

through the entrance in the kitchen descended

the narrow creaky dusty stairs

uncertain of what would greet them down there

taking the guise of an ancient lair!

Having to use the torch there were large photos

of pyramids and artifacts

shelfs with real items placed neatly on long tables

the air had that mouldy odour

stifling hot and dusty made it hard to breathe

their calmness gone began to seethe!

There was  a strange atmosphere they had to go

as they did heard faint whimpering

aimed the torch there saw her mum and sister

petrified afraid to move a muscle

helping them up quickly left the weird basement

away from that sense of encasement!

In the warmth of her best friends car she spoke

of her husbands involvement

with artifacts being taken from ancient tombs

and ignoring the stern warnings

how several hooded figures seem to materialize

their bodies and minds did paralyze!

They were forced down the stairs to the cellar

were they took several items

and with the girl’s father went as they had come

leaving them traumatized

helpless they cried uncertain what to do next

leaving them all perplexed!

Not the Christmas Home Coming she expected!

The Foureyed Poet.

Waiting!

Though it was not that late on the station

the couple waiting for a train

began to notice it was extremely quiet

when they heard a thump

coming from the direction of an escalator

what was happening were unsure!

Watching it slowly rumble downwards empty

what appeared to be blood

covered each step they shuffled backwards

just as a train sped through

but did not stop their thoughts confused

suspiciously the vicinity perused!

What nightmare had befallen them both here

noticing a poster on a wall

warning travellers to be aware of mutant rats

as they read heard scratching

noises that were becoming louder and nearby

they had to escape or at least try!

Then a squealing that was a crescendo of babble

there must have been thousands

surged towards them their only escape the lines

hoping another train did not come

realising why it had not stopped were they too late

weary and in a growing panic state!

These creatures were huge and determined to attack

they knew their flesh each desired

still light so were able to see an exit in a rusty fence

squeezing through ripping their skin

their dripping blood leaving a much stronger scent

the rats their compulsion to vent!

Quickly blocking the hole with an old fridge freezer

soon realised it was no barrier

with the sheer numbers they soon crashed through

so their next move was to climb

up a rusting fire escape of a warehouse just ahead

out of  breath looked down with dread!

From the vantage point could view the numbers

making out the bloody carnage left

calling for help on a smart phone could only sit

saw flame throwers being used

the distinct sound of  rapidly increasing gun fire

in shock both now began to tire!

Eventually a harassed voice answered their call

uncertain when rescue would come

it could be a long time or never was the reply

for now glad death had spared them

yet from above heard scratching and scurrying

was the reaper their end hurrying?

Near The Line!

On a stretch of mainline railway line

passengers on passing trains

reported seeing a man chasing a dog

worried it was close to the line

train drivers to had seen the pair

giving them all a scare!

Rail bosses went to see for themselves

but nothing was seen

yet deciding the area must be watched

as the reports were mounting

and the worry an accident could result

the culprit had to be caught!

Two senior transport police were assigned

as it was a criminal offence

trespassing on any railway property

with fencing down either side

on that long lonely stretch near a bend

where nature and society blend.

They settled down on the side of the line

patrolling in both directions

trains continued to roar by at high-speed

evening set in it was quieter

a faint bark could be heard coming nearer

every minute much clearer.

This put them on alert standing down line

then in the distance saw

a figure running directly towards them

as they heard a deep bark

seeming to crescendo a few feet ahead

cautiously now they tread!

On the fast-speed track an express was due

both shouting to warn them

to get off the rails but were simply ignored

a man and large dog were clear

as the locomotive thundered into view

time was short they knew!

Both could only watch from their position

man and beast were overwhelmed

as there was no doubt that metal hit flesh

yet as the train raced on

searching no bodies were found on the line

evidence not a single sign!

Reluctantly they concluded an unnatural event

a terror gripped their souls

receiving a call the  driver had seen something

but no way could he stop

this message was relayed to them by phone

here they stood really alone!

This case is still being investigated!

Empty Carriage!

With only minutes to spare to catch the train

she boarded the empty carriage.

Thought it odd hearing a door open and close

nobody was on the platform!

Before sitting checked to see who had got on

nervous as the journey was long!

Nobody boarded assumed they’d gone else where

so relaxed to take a knapp.

The warmth rhythm and motion made her doze

waking as her seat was pushed!

Thinking somebody was behind her was annoying

as sleep she had been enjoying.

When it happened once again got up to complain

but the seat was empty.

This the young woman certainly wasn’t expecting

and was still on her own!

Now that sensation of impending doom dawned

what evil here was spawned?

The sliding doors at one end opened and closed

then soon after at the other!

But no visible soul entered the empty carriage

as she lost her balance.

Falling hitting her head with a glancing blow

that happened very slow!

It was though a person had cushioned her fall

sitting dazed saw a reflection.

That looked like a man standing by her side

but nothing was there!

Afraid to move again stayed firmly in her seat

until her journey was complete.

As soon as it stopped she ran to get off the train

not even seeing any staff.

With the urge to glance back into her carriage

she was sure somebody was there.

As it pulled out and faded into the darkness

she released her stress!

Now in her car she still didn’t feel alone!

Last Working Day!

Living and commuting from the village his choice

on this Friday morning it was hard.

It was the last working day of the week to rise

this morning harder than usual.

Eye lids half-open as he arrived at the station

definitely lacking concentration.

Dark and frosty on fresh intoxicating country air

as the birds annoyingly sang.

Getting unwillingly out of the warm taxi interior

and then entered within.

Surprised to see somebody was already in there

but really he didn’t care.

Being such an early hour wished he was still in bed

sat down in the waiting room.

Closing his eyes to rest before long had dozed off

waking up with a jolt.

A sound woke him after five minutes had passed

on the far wall a shadow cast!

Going on the platform the large clock clicked seven

his train due at seven ten.

Saw movement from the corner of his right eye

reluctantly turned his head.

A uniformed figure went through a solid wall of brick

he began to feel dizzy and sick!

Just as the train arrived and was glad to get on board

uncertain of what he had seen!

But could not remember anything like that here before

had he misinterpreted natural images?

Though it happened in seconds found it disturbing

now felt scared about returning!

What had he actually seen?

Walk The Underground!

On a night shift the underground worker

had to walk the tunnels.

Along the empty track in the pitch black

a torch his only guide.

And a radio to report if anything wrong

cautiously moving along!

It was just before one am he started to walk

down the ramp onto the line.

The only sounds his footsteps on the track

too nervous to look back.

Halfway along his route saw a flickering light

no work was planned that night.

Approaching saw a workman crouching down

busy on some unknown task.

Calling out to enquire what he was doing

the man stood and spoke.

He said hello called in for an urgent repair

made sense why he was there.

An hour later on his return he had gone

radioed to say all was well.

Mentioned the worker he saw in the tunnel

as on reflection thought it odd.

The radio operator told him others had to

as they had walked through!

You had seen the ghost the voice said with glee

possibly was hit by a train!

Some sixty years ago while doing some repairs

this came as a complete surprise.

Never experiencing anything like this  before

no longer a sceptic that’s for sure!
