Missed!

He missed that touch and sound of her soft voice

as the coffin was lowered into the grave

why had she died the autopsy was inconclusive

suicide was on her death certificate

married for five years his childhood sweetheart

never thought so soon they would part!

There by his side their son who was distraught

just turned eighteen they were close

his eyes viewed the casket as he threw a rose

just before reluctantly leaving

unable to accept she would take her own life

this he knew of his wife!

What had happened repeating the question

over and over in his mind

she worked hard too often away on business

never spoke of her own job

as it entailed secretive government contracts

concerned she had to hide the facts!

Shattered receiving that middle of the night call

worried from her had not heard

tried to phone countless times but got no reply

leaving earlier with a kiss and touch

promised that she would be save while gone

knew she was positive and strong!

Mentioned a car on several occasions had followed

closely behind while out and about

but brushed it off saying it was nothing of concern

expressed anxiety but said do not to worry

on reflection recalling how sinister her voice tone

surely the dangers should have known!

Told the police when questioned soon after his loss

mentioned his fears and what she said

nothing was done believing she had taken her life

closing the case and filing it away

he was certain she had been silenced for a reason

eliminated for what they classed as treason?

Or  uncovered information not for public consumption

sealing her inevitable death or just his  presumption

laying in their bed turned to where she always laid

knowing her spirit was there but still very afraid!

Aware!

An odd sensation was all she was aware

a pain and the darkness

awoke suddenly alone in her apartment

as if from a deep sleep

everything seemed exactly as before

yet different was so sure!

On the large settee she found herself laid

adjusting her blurred vision

her pet dog came to lick the hanging hand

but never felt the sensation

concerned sat up it was then she realised

life had been deprived!

Her body was on the settee white and still

yet she seemed so real

the dog slowly backed away as if in fear

her husband came in

from a night shift and to her side ran

a tired shattered man!

She had loved him now could not touch

only watch as he tried

to revive the woman he had just wed

phoning for an ambulance

in shock laid beside her loudly praying

their pet with a ball playing!

Paramedics came very quickly with aid

watching expecting the light

her husband holding their fluffy pet dog

hearing every word they said

both tried everything to start the heart

not wanting her forever to part!

Surely it was too late life had now passed

but a weird sensation

more pain a deep breath and a gentle kiss

a warm hand gentle breath

knowing she was back alive and not alone

really hearing his soft tone!

Upon a stretcher drips in arms on oxygen

heading to the medical centre

heard a voice an image of her dead father

faintly saying not your time

my precious child but I am always near

later was certain she did hear!

Eighteen months seemed to have flown by

their dreams had come true

back in hospital for birth of their child

the problems now melted away

happily over time her strength grew

incredibly life had begun anew!

The Lodger!

The single young woman found it was hard

even though working

to pay the bills and the large mortgage to

she needed a lodger

providing extra income so she could cope

this really was the hope!

The lodger arrived late on an winter evening

there on the front porch

an old suitcase clasped in bony hand

speaking in a quiet voice

harsh whisper in a monotonous drone

yet had a chilling tone!

Said she had read about the room to rent

yet not contacted by phone

the owner reluctant to let her come inside

struggled paying the bills

regrettably no other enquiries  received

she could only proceed.

From the first meeting doubt was embedded

within her inner fears

already the warmth of her home had waned

showed her the room

gave her approval she would take it uttered

in agreement muttered!

Moved in that night with no other luggage

went in the room in silence

the door shut yet the owner full of dread

what had she let in her house

sat in the lounge listening to the television

already regretting her decision!

Decided to sleep down  in the lounge that night

later thought it was silly

to allow her imagination to spook her thoughts

the lodger would be fine

three days passed before eventually emerging

trouble began surging!

Unable to comprehend what she was doing

no food had been taken in

could not recall if the toilet had been used

not feeling well stayed inside

never been sick as this trying to think back

or so much energy lack!

The lodger crept about now mainly in the dark

the place would not heat

it was constantly cold and so many flies buzzed

always a dank mouldy smell

filled the air never had this before she came

nothing could she blame!

In the end decided had to make conversation

depression was overwhelming

even hard to climb the stairs breath short

soon outside the room stood

before she could knock the door it opened

into emptiness did descend!

Compelled to enter there saw the gaunt figure

empty eyes and  almost skeletal

went to speak but there was a piercing scream

followed by a blinding light

she woke with a shudder and fell off her bed

thinking she must be dead!

Finding her heart was racing knew she was not

sat shaken on the thick  rug

cold no more really went to the lodgers door

finding it was slightly open

summed up the courage to go right inside

had to face not hide!

But it was empty the lodger seemed to have left

the tension and fear had lifted

the odours and flies were not about any more

though she had not existed

strange had it been an awful nightmare she had

certainly never had one that bad!

Came home from work around seven that evening

got herself something to eat

then there was a faint tap upon the front door

wondering who it could be

nobody usually called at this time without a call

went to answer it down the hall!

Devastated to see a thin pale girl holding a suitcase

within  her bony hand!
