Watching!

On the dusty tank the soldiers stared intently

watching the shells strike

detonating onto the occupied enemy lines

as rockets and shell fire

was quickly returned in a never ending battle

creating vibration and rattle!

Each were distant from the carnage and anguish

young conscripts not hardened

warriors of  too many campaigns of aggression

again forced to protect their land

believing their cause was just without hesitation

the civilians filled with trepidation!

But as with all brutal conflicts it breeds more hate

resentment creating much bigger foe

a cycle of revenge and bloody savage retaliation

as the very young bitterly grow up

the horrors absorbed into impressionable minds

peace hopes fading behind closing blinds!

The ever mounting strife going back to long ago

hard to break historical differences

each have grievances and suspicions to tell

that seem impossible to resolve

the deaths and injuries continue to increase

can a way ever be found for peace?

My wishes always for a planet without wars!

The Gladiator!

The gladiator faced a fierce deadly foe

forced into the arena

stained with blood of many men before

hostile crowds jeering

shouting abuse with an increasing fire

a savage death their desire!

No shade the sun burnt  unprotected skin

sweat poured from each pore

clad in leather armour and metal helmet

with growing agitation

watching his opponent slowly advance

to quickly kill the chance!

Holding sharp swords and small shields

to maximise the injuries

every blow followed by a baying crowd

sapping their strength

chunks of flesh gouged by pitiless slashes

with the increased clashes!

The superior champion gladiator parried

knowing how to defeat

overpowering without mercy his quarry

hacking him to the ground

the final merciful strike raised a cheer

the death bloody and severe!

Lifting his dripping sword above his head

saluting crowd and dignitary

triumphant and proud the people’s hero

another victory achieved

impassive while body was hastily removed

again his superiority proved!

The gladiator proudly went to receive his trophy!

The Executioner!

He stood poised the axe raised ready to strike

no remorse in his cold heart!

As the sharp blade makes that final clean-cut

the cheers raising his adrenaline.

Making him proud of being the executioner

his sadistic nature began to stir!

High up on the cold stark and stained stones

towering over his latest victim!

His face hidden behind his sweaty black hood

emotionless at their pleading!

He had status yet was loathed and feared

by the people even as they cheered!

Many heads rolled under his term in the post

bringing excitement and tension.

A barbaric spectacle drew the large crowds

to watch the condemned die!

But too often when the cut was not precise

the blows were at least thrice!

The executioner now no longer plies his trade

in most cultures today.

That phantom vision still makes the skin crawl

evil eyes staring identity hidden.

A monster where there’s no chance of escape

as the condemned await their fate!

Hopelessness and despair on their final walk!

Death now their only salvation!

Telescopic Sight!

Through the telescopic sight the sniper aimed

no emotions clouded his mind.

It was his job to protect the military force

no matter the cost!

From a high point watching and waiting

for him no hesitating!

His specially honed skills often called to assist

in the protection of the troops.

Never killing on impulse but by a strict code

a soldier loyal to his country!

Following orders if instructed would make the kill

his duty he would always fulfil!

Camouflaged hidden from view like a ghost

he haunted the enemy!

They were not safe from his telescopic sight

an angel of death!

Never seen or heard until the lethal bullet strike

confirming the kill on his radio mic!

These lonesome warriors in a war zone!
