The Occupant!

The house was drab with a ghoulish feel

the occupant invited her in

a rather frail lady using a walking stick

she was nervous being new

should have support from a senior nurse

but alone would have to converse!

who had been taken ill at very short notice

the patient had just come back

from convalescent home living here alone

the duty of the district nurse

was to check dressings and complications

including well-being of patients!

Though looked quite well was rather creepy

imagining her as a witch

that thought was not helped as a black cat

strolled into the large room

wanting to get on tried to see the dressing

but now had begun stressing!

What a first case to have been assigned to do

the room was extremely dingy

curtains were closed her anxiety was high

eventually the task completed

cleared up and was prepared for an exit

when the lady said why not sit?

Offered to make the nurse a tea or coffee

for showing such kindness

shaking just wanting to run then the clock

chimed loudly she jumped

making excuses turned to run and tripped

over the cat her head clipped!

Got up a trickle of blood from a small wound

ran down her now pale face

a little dizzy managed to leave glancing back

the elderly woman stood

staring out in her arms the dreaded cat

the enthusiasm had gone flat!

Walked away out of sight back to the car

blood dripped on the uniform

decided it best to return to the surgery

but then lost consciousness

awoke by her loud mobile phone tone

very cold and still alone!

A fellow nurse rang to see if she was alright

said no need visit the patient

whose address she had minutes ago left

until she saw the time

on the large man’s wristwatch she wore

it was now twelve forty-four!

She had been here over two hours asleep

not thinking it was the fall

her friend said the old lady had died

last evening at home

trying very hard not to scream aloud

in her hands head bowed!

What had she seen it was so surreal

in her interior mirror saw

the wound and track of dried blood

how her head throbbed

there was nobody at all in the street

sat firmly in the car seat!

Petrified called her boyfriend to come!

The Foureyed Poet.
