The Door!

There was the key he had lost some years ago

that fitted the rusting lock

belonging to the door at the top of narrow stairs

in his dead uncle’s house

that was told by him every visit never to go near

how inside wanted to peer!

Now in his thirties the warning clearly remembered

his aunt within still resided

had found the key in the uncle’s study desk draw

fear had never left him

took it home on a hook in his own kitchen placed

soon noticed it had been misplaced!

After searching for a while puzzled where it was

was distracted with other thoughts

now confronted with the keys re-appearance

renewed his long-lost fears

realising the time was here to face his own past

decided to open the door at last!

At his uncle’s house his aunt sat so frail and old

let her know he was there

then took his long dreaded steps to the door

the dust made him cough

spiders cobwebs made his blood pressure high

his childhood nightmare was nigh!

With his mind screaming to leave right away

turned the key pushed it open

an awful odour made him retch as he faltered

fumbled for a light switch

could not find one yet the wall seemed so wet

stood helpless with regret!

More use to the darkness the landing light shone

creating creepy odd shadows

he became aware of something near the window

that had been blacked out

metal bars screwed in front something slithered

sinking to the floor his strength withered!

And on top of him was a monstrous drooling freak

with a deep throaty voice spoke

welcome home brother aunty said you were coming

in the doorway she stood

glad you to have met at long last she closed the door

nothing was heard of him anymore!

His cries for help were never heard!

The Basement!

Excitement filled the car a new adventure

the family had moved.

Through dad’s job they had to relocate

it was very short notice.

The company organised a house to rent

they were really content.

Their own furniture had been put in storage

except for personal items.

Mid afternoon drove onto the long drive

of the single storey property.

Yet each experienced an ominous feeling

it didn’t seem appealing!

As they stopped their pet terrier began to bark

reluctant to get out of the car!

None of them were keen to actually get inside

but mum and dad led the way.

They immediately noticed the pungent smell

making them feel unwell.

Luxurious  but had an oppressive atmosphere

their dog reluctantly went in.

And headed straight towards the large kitchen

sitting by the basement door!

With suspicious eyes saw a ball rolling his way

he certainly didn’t want to play!

Though locked it had suddenly opened on its own

making him snarl in fear.

The daughter was drawn to the basement entrance

hearing a childs voice

As a mist hovered and slid down the wooden stairs

just as they entered in pairs.

Then her parents and brother said they’d heard it to

unnerved turned to each other.

As all the family slowly went down into the basement

the door closed and bolted!

Their dog Mace backed away barking and cowered

this adventure now soured!

Unable to open it had no way to go but down

finding a light switch flicked it on.

The odour was very strong to their dismay

a decomposed body lay.

Running back up the steep stairs they heard barking

and the door being unbolted.

The light was exhilarating as they ran onto the drive

passed the surprised rescuer.

The dogs loud pitiful whaling had brought him here

something was wrong it was clear!

The house was soon sealed off as a search revealed

a family slaughtered in the basement.

They had been there for some months undiscovered

nobody knew who they were!

Mace and his masters family found somewhere new

deeply effected by the experience

And the search for the killer was put into operation

spreading to the whole nation.

Unable to explain the ghostly images encountered

and the dogs unusual behaviour.

They couldn’t forget the day that started so happily

ending in a horrific way!

The dreadful images forever haunting their dreams

nobody was ever caught it seems!
