Hot!

With the hot weather sapping their strength

the group of teenage friends

found a spot along the fast flowing river

where a natural pool was formed

to cool themselves from blistering heat

that also burnt their naked feet!

This was an unfamiliar spot along the bank

the fives senses became aware

of the sudden ripples in the still clear water

and how it became so quiet

as if danger was very close to their position

to each other confirmed suspicion!

Without warning the huge shape sprang out

from the pool screeching

grabbing by his leg the youngest teen Al

who was instantly swallowed

instinct made them blindly panic and scatter

there was no time for idle chatter!

As they tripped getting caught in undergrowth

weird sounds now ever closer

there was nowhere to hide from this thing

that resembled a huge snake

soon exhausted afraid to call to each other

desperately trying to find safe cover!

The weather had changed now heavy rain fell

scared to breath or even twitch

ground and vegetation seemed to shudder

alone yet were almost touching

knowing death was slowly slithering their way

sinking in the sodden clay!

Coming close zigzagging between their bodies

its slimy body even touching

over the legs of one of the girls who screamed

unable to stifle her pain

she to would soon have been the next fatality

in this nightmare of irrationality!

Saying their last departing prays men’s voices

were heard shouting then gun fire

the creature retreated but did not get far

suddenly turning to strike

an explosion tore it apart spraying everyone

in yellow goo at last it was done!

Convenient a military patrol was close by!

Sensation!

Could not shake off the daunting sensation

drowning breathing in air

agitated at every sound and movement

shadows seemed to follow me

many voices in my head screamed so loud

nothing there yet felt in a crowd

ripples in reality as everything was blurred

forces of good and evil stirred!

Weather becoming unpredictable everywhere

strange patterns in the skies

earths life force rapidly bleeding outward

huge cracks spreading below

population uncertain of safety and stability

raging storms of deadly carnage

there were no havens to hide in the surface

not a single untainted space!

Fires raged and ravaged more than ever before

law and order disintegrated

crimes of violence grew as money diminished

the fabric of society so fragile

the weary masses caught within this time slip

reeling from wars and harsh rule

uncertain each day what would happen next

had it been written in an ancient text?

Daily life an unpredictable lottery for survival!

Old Canal Bank!

They thought it was just a large cat on the grass

by the old canal bank

drawing near the object dived into the water

large ripples spread outwards

yet silence remained creating an atmosphere

that deep-seated fear!

All seemed so natural the same familiar scene

over the surprise walked on

continuing chatting along the narrow tow path

reaching their favourite seat

facing the murky water the object was again sat

thinking maybe a big rat!

How they tried to ignore this persistent entity

there ominously not moving

to their dismay it was soon joined by another

that slid onto the bank

this was definitely bigger it began to slither

as their nerve began to wither!

Realising there was danger they began to run

knowing the short cut out

back onto the bustling rush hour town centre

with unprecedented speed

the now visible snake-like creature  attacked

the momentum they lacked!

The last to go was caught and swallowed whole

witnessing this appalling event

three friends stumbled away in complete terror

as the smaller beast lunged

tearing at a young girls foot she screamed pain

breaking free before it bit again!

Reaching what they hoped was a safe location

stood on the bridge looking down

upon the now tranquil canal below their feet

with no signs or undulations

what were they why had it killed their mate

for him help was too late!

Now in and on the canal bank nothing stirred!
