Strike Twelve!

Could hear a distant clock strike twelve midnight

it was now the new year of 2019

all around the explosions and colour of fireworks

she had drunk a lot but felt feisty

just slapped a friend who had become too familiar

it was an annual celebration

seeing in another year with all her school mates

reminiscing laughs and debates!

But this time a distinct uncomfortable atmosphere

had to get out of the noisy party

she found herself wondering dark country lanes

it was not frightening alone at first

until the fireworks had ended becoming so quiet

being a town dweller the countryside

was unfamiliar territory without a coat was cold

scared wanted somebody to hold!

She could hear strange noises and animals sounds

she guessed that was the explanation

had aimlessly wondered moving away from the party

unaware something nearby was stalking

the cold began to make her shiver clearing the mind

snow began to fall coming to a halt

turned to go back as a spider-like creature descended

from the trees feared her life had ended!

Instinct and adrenaline gave her strength and power

ran into a field visibility being near zero

tripping and scratching herself staying by the hedge

could sense it was following close by

how could it grow to such a huge size pondered

to scared dared not look behind

saw a light prayed it was where she had walked out

now filled with panic and doubt!

There was no sounds that had become so very loud

reached the garden wall climbed over

scraping both legs to escape the thing chasing her

in pain and bleeding got to the rear door

yes this was the place but now no drunken revelers

going inside the spider had caught up

Just managed to close it thought this thing contained

but a tentacle pierced her skull brain was drained!

Awoke shouting her boyfriend trying to calm her down

its alright C J another of those nightmares

never known you to have so many whats on your mind

settling down covered in sweat so real

shaking it off ignored his question but was concerned

having a cup of coffee got a text from a friend

inviting her to a New Years Eve party in the countryside

quickly accepting to her friend replied!

For a few moments shuddered thinking of that nightmare

just a coincidence no such thing as giant-spiders out there!

The Calling!

Knew it was A risk in the wilderness

but had the calling to come

since he was a child this was his aim

at first the weather was fine

he had brought minimum provisions

seen this place in his visions!

This was his predestined lifes mission

had prayed for guidance

had worried parents from a young age

dedicated and well-studied

at twenty knew told them he must go

his family’s misgivings did show!

That morning he set off on his mission

rode his rebuilt motorbike

an emotional parting then he was gone

happy that day had come

parked then carried a large backpack

heading up the twisty track!

Now absorbed by natural surroundings

within his own thoughts

seemed oblivious to the many creatures

was contented raising his arms

praying loudly and walked as if guided

all needs would be provided!

Had no doubt waited his whole life for this

by the fast pure waterfall

drank the pure nectar and settled down

nightfall rapidly approached

under the stars at last he was satisfied

his future would not be denied!

He had no fear knew god protected him

this was a hallowed ground

here was untainted by mans savage hand

within was purified of his sins

now with the power and love in his soul

was ready to accept his role!

Headed home ready to become the good priest!

Enclosed!

There alone in the room felt enclosed

yet somehow something lingered

sounds though faint made him shiver

no radio or any other distractions

could have made those creepy sounds

as knocking in his head pounds!

What was so close yet he could not see

nothing visible but why so petrified

afraid to move or look around the room

surely this must be his imagination

his breath now was becoming strained

his strength and willpower drained!

The open door closed wanted to scream

the air chilled heard a faint whisper

understood not a syllable of any words

mouth became so dry his heart raced

on his sweaty neck a sudden sharp pain

no longer within could he remain!

What was here tormenting his very being

a shadow appeared and circled him

a physical push made him fall to his knees

summing up what energy he had left

crawled to the door struggling to his feet

prayed this specter he could defeat!

As it began that awful sensation had gone

but the scars within were really strong

what had happened just could not explain

to this day vividly remains in his brain!

Unholy Beasts!

The vicar stood at the entrance to his church

was confronted by the body

of a woman a cross had pierced her heart

he did not recognise her

the silver cross he knew was from the altar

his faith did briefly falter!

He was sure only half an hour ago he saw it

checked within it had gone

tried to phone the authorities really shaken

the phone line only crackled

returned the body was no longer laying there

at the blood could only stare!

The sun beat down as the church clock chimed

striking twelve midday

looked around at the many neat rows of graves

something caught his eye

bravely walking towards this small object

nearing it stood erect!

Looked like a gargoyle an ancient inhuman beast

the female body lay torn apart

the silver cross flung aside blood spattered

retreating it sped away

from this position he could see many more

an infestation could not ignore!

Tightly holding his bible he had been carrying

went into the sanctuary

of his church slamming forcefully the oak door

heard quiet  gentle talking

a couple sat admiring the carvings unconcerned

as he approached turned!

Smiling as a young woman joined them worried

her friend she could not find

the vicar heard what she said regrettably knew

where had they come from

high-pitched screeching spoilt the tranquillity

as he felt the encroaching hostility!

Remembering work had just started on the crypt

in the basement of the church

why did they leave him alone could not figure

the family stood disturbed

would have to tell them the truth and confide

what was massing outside!

Whatever these abominable manifestations were

there seemed no escape

tears were heavy at hearing a friend had expired

noise increased panic grew

clear they could not cross the church’s holy line

he needed a divine sign!

Were these sent here from satan’s nefarious domain

before the simple altar he prayed

afraid this was the beginning of man’s final stand

the family knelt in veneration

at the same moment each felt the slight tremor

which soon became a roar!

Items fell from around the ancient parish church

books magazines pews tipped

then above their heads the large cross crashed

in front of them staying upright

the face of Christ was at their eye level glowing

at that moment faith flowing!

Everything went still a calm was now restored

standing in unison they hugged

the vicar made his way to the door opening it

walking into the chilly air

a layer of white clouds covered the blue sky

he raised his arms up high!

He could heard a soft voice calling out for help

looking around the headstones

saw lots of scorch marks then nothing else

then the young woman

who had been butchered found sat on a seat

clothed but with bare feet!

She smiled brightly as her friend approached

faded into the surroundings

they all had witnessed this wonderful sight

a bond between them grown

they left in peace promising to come back

with her family and memorial plaque!

The vicar watched them go united in reverence

what they had experienced was intense!

Their lives had been changed forever!

Summer Of Sixty One!

Rain had been forecast for the whole area

being a mountainous region

it was a guaranteed regular occurrence

their nearest neighbours

lived two miles down an old wagon trail

the ecology here frail!

As the light faded the animals under cover

on the small sheep farm

those distant rumbles of thunder heard

and streaks of lightning

it was late summer of nineteen sixty-one

the days work was done.

The family sat down for their evening meal

there were two children

a son Max of twelve and a daughter of six

who was named Jade

they were happy but becoming agitated

their fear more elevated!

For many years there had been lots of cases

of animal mutilations

even two of their own sheep and neighbours

stories of UFO’s often seen

and unknown creatures in the woods and hills

given everyone the chills!

What was going to happen next the question

that would soon be apparent

the children were never allowed to go far

though Jade was a lot younger

her brother Max loved his sister they got on

their bond truly strong!

On this night the storm skirted around them

their faithful pet and guard dog

sat quietly on the porch as they went to bed

early starts the routine

it seemed a quiet night very warm and dank

but eventually to sleep sank!

The dog was aroused from his rest around two

his long ears pricked up

an inaudible noise alerting his sensitive hearing

from the trees a gleaming light

slowly descended landing onto soft damp ground

without making any sound!

Then small beings came from within its interior

through a bluish haze

stood as if waiting two approached the main door

soon Jade came out

between the two went to the craft as if in a trance

instantly did advance!

At this point Max opened the window being alerted

to see the event happening

ran down the stairs in a panic and spiraling dread

outside watched it take off

the dog howled he loudly shouted felt helpless

in himself emotionally feckless!

Soon he was joined by their distraught parents

totally unable to comprehend

their first reaction was to frantically question

staring into the cloudy sky

he had the impression they both blamed him

heartbroken knew the future dim!

Now sixty-four sat on the porch of the same house

reflecting that dreadful night

his parents long dead did not recover from the loss

life was hard from then on

his sister was never seen again his guilt remained

still himself he blamed!

There had been searches police saturated the area

months passed rumours grew

the family was accused of killing their daughter

nobody really believed the truth

on his own how he prayed for Jades safe return

holding one of her toys he did so yearn!

Max to this very day has not given up hope!

Unaware!

The women sat laughing outside the cafe

on a summer’s evening

joyful time with friends having a drink

happy banter relaxing

unaware of the danger now approaching

on their lives encroaching!

Down the other end of the long boulevard

they had no idea of a stampede

of people for no apparent reason collapsing

then writhing on the side-walk

where seconds before each stood or walked

many so excitedly talked!

Within minutes becoming fiendish beasts

rising to attack anybody near

as more succumbed started on each other

nobody immune to this hydra

ravaging each others flesh the wave moved

all humanity in them removed!

The group of women could now hear noises

awful blood curdling screams

and began to feel the frightful stampede

instinct made them stand

dashing inside as the human wave neared

seeing the horror as it appeared!

Petrified knowing they would be vanquished

soon helicopters were overhead

it was their blunder that let the toxin escape

from a top-secret facility

fifteen miles from the large populated area

realising it was beyond hysteria!

Their only option now to destroy and contain

not knowing how much pathogen

had infiltrated before the leak had been sealed

nor realising a chain reaction

had been created it was now a viral contagion

starting this unstoppable invasion!

Peering down upon the abominable growing chaos

in the crews minds their families

who did reside within or very near city boundaries

but  orders had to be carried out

each quietly cursed and prayed for those exposed

for now they killed unopposed!

As for the future this they could not predict!
