Oblivious!

Oblivious he stared at the huge flat screen television

smart to in more ways than one

watching the films dramas news and variety shows

believing everything that was said

living his perfect life feeling secure in his own home

unaware that he was being spied upon

mobile phone calls monitored and all emails read

or grasp in this society had to delicately tread!

Not for him wanting to know more he was satisfied

thought little of the plastics or any pollution

or what was in the food water bottled and piped

just fantasy the possibility of robots

oblivious most communications relied on cyborgs

that civil liberties were eroded away

or he like the rest of humanity were being played

that by the few we had all been betrayed!

No not until his perfect world was suddenly destroyed!

The Violin!

Always there in his head that violin still played

over and over again so clear

a deep thought that always made him smile

the one good memory

sitting alone deep within himself never spoke

not for years the spirit broke!

Could not tell anyone about those nightmares

existing in the ghettos

fear and degradation treated as sub-human

trapped like ship rats

because of the origins of their birth heritage

a whole block a squalid cage!

What kept him and others going the playing

of that lone violin

by an incredible elderly man who never tired

gave them all a little hope

yet amongst the growing brutal treatment

a malevolent entity present!

Down in the cellars were not only vermin

freely scurrying unhindered

there was an abhorrent entity embedded

within the rotting fabric

an unspoken dread they could not escape

evil without a shape!

He was sure there was no written records

the soldiers did not care

if any disappeared they loathed his kind

it meant less to guard

as far as he could remember one survived

only his life was not deprived!

He had tried to block out the day he entered

those cellars the first time

persuaded by his friends as fun to explore

even then had that dread

an even darker evil lay in wait for its prey

ready for them to slay!

It had started well the thrill of the adventure

to take their minds off

the persecution of them and their families

in the squalid surroundings

they were forced to endure being  no life at all

preferring in the rubble to crawl!

He could also still hear their terrified screams

the violin music muffled it

deeper into the darkness just one candle to see

he had taken from his parents

why had it happened he always in his thought

so often the answer sought!

He saw the shape in the corner heard the growl

froze as the others carried on

surely they must have at least heard that sound

why had he not warned them

petrified he surmised thinking back all that time

had he caused an unforgivable crime!

When he could find the courage saw the shadow

grow so large and engulfed

all his precious friends he considered as family

their struggling and yelling quelled

chasing after the moving blackness was repelled

by the monster here dwelled!

Part of the roof fell just managed to stagger away

hurt remembered shouting

for others to come down and save all his mates

then felt himself being pulled back

but scrabbled to the street and saw on his arm

marks of the beast that did the harm!

None were ever found never told them the truth

physically healed forever scared

but within his mind hell was above and below him

the violin sustained his existence

until the soldiers took him forced onto a lorry

no more music deeply sorry!

Today alone in the elderly persons nursing home

his relatives perished in the war

still scared of the dark and every shadow he saw

expecting to be swallowed by the beast

in a world of misery waited for his dying day

listening to that violin play!
