Holiday Cabin!

First night on holiday was always exciting

this year was different

she had come ahead alone not so inviting

here early with good intent

mum and daughter due tomorrow night

being alone did not seem right!

Had come ahead early she had an extra day

wanted to see her daughter Kate

had been at university soon be here to stay

for two weeks could not wait

never been here before wanted to prepare

of any danger was not aware!

Busy getting holiday cabin how she wanted

soon darkness had come

felt tired never thought it could be haunted

to exhaustion had succumb

decided to have an early and restful sleep

anything else to the morning keep!

Not use to being in the countryside all alone

or cabin with panoramic view

had forgotten her mobile and no house phone

here alone anxiety grew

now for the first time began to feel uneasy

stomach churning was queasy!

As she came out of the bathroom she saw

through the bedroom window

the shape of a figure she could not ignore

yelling her actions slow

froze but then in an instant it had gone

for the morning did so long!

Unable to relax ran around to check doors

making sure they were locked

terrified felt sweat oozing from her pores

her well-being totally rocked

as if circling heard loud footsteps near

echoing in her ears so clear!

Many thoughts racing through her mind

were all the windows locked

would her child mums lifeless body find

now feeling deeply shocked

cowering in the corner behind the settee

wondering who it could be!

Creaking wooden boards surrounded her

scraping along the walls

with some object the fear within did stir

also across the glass

high-pitched a shadow passed as well

followed by a nasty smell!

Exhausted eventually fell into a half sleep

awaking with a start

the rising sun into the cabin began to peep

her fast beating heart

stiff where she had not moved needed a wee

parched so wanted a cup of tea!

The birds were singing loudly she ventured out

one shaky step at a time

afraid to make a sound in case it was still about

she was alive felt sublime

two joggers went by staring then running past

it was safe she thought at last!

Venturing onto the veranda now could see why

the couple moved away so fast

deep cuts in the wood and word reading die

she could only stare aghast

it covered the exterior in a place so serene

this horror did not fit the scene!

A familiar voice relieved she quickly turned

her daughter stood concerned!

She left with her family never to return here

something watched them go so very near!

No Christmas!

The children sat shivering alone in the house

cold and hungry in a squalid home

no Christmas tree or decorations  were here

in their short lives never known

to have warm clothes and much food to eat

it would be a miraculous treat!

Dad came around to hurt and shout at mum

and was always very drunk

but they saw many uncles coming and going

when their mum was there

never gave any cuddle’s nor showed kindness

they never knew happiness!

Alone once more on the eve of Christmas day

left to see it in with nothing

they only had each other no presents for them

rummaging in the dirty kitchen

such a pitiful sight listening to the happy voices

of neighbouring children with choices!

They held hands staring longingly out the window

hoping a kind person would come

to give them compassion some love and food

their mum did not seem to bother

so tired went to their rubbish strewn bedroom

a drunk mum would soon loom!

As children woke to see what Father Christmas

had brought for each of them

These three little ones dreaded yet another day

empty miserable without care

at a time that is supposed to be filled with joy

on the birthday of a holy boy!

Friends Had Said!

Friends had said leave him don’t take the pain

he’ll really hurt you one day!

The young mum knew in her heart it was true

but she loved this man.

His abuse she took thinking it was not meant

both at the age of consent!

Would not admit that she feared her partner

the blows just pressure release.

She also worked the bruises were well hidden

harder now with the kids.

Somehow couldn’t break away from his power

each was a dangerous hour!

One day the tension was impossible to contain

and the violence excelled.

Terrified she left taking the two crying babes

leaving them with relatives.

Her husband had followed the row continued

his anger had truly stewed!

In the street and back in their miserable home

all control was now lost!

Each blow hurt more cries for mercy ignored

this time it never stopped

Then there was no more motion only silence

losing the strength for defence!

He stood without any emotion just indifference

leaving his wife and a mother.

Dead on the carpet at the age of twenty-five

should have had many years.

Laying alone as this man-made his futile retreat

her children never again to meet!

We can only hope justice will be done!
