What Favour?

Why he had agreed to help his old  mate

was to return a favour

what favour to this day never recalled

just help me move my gear

to a new flat well seemed a simple task

was he about to be a jackass?

Inside the car and the boot was crammed

setting off to find the address

surprised on seeing where he was moving

a huge refurbished asylum

turned into varying sized flats for rent

his at the top a long ascent!

That was when it dawned this was a mistake

first the lift did not work

no matter how many presses of the button

nothing would happen at all

struggling to the stairs his arms were full

then it came hard staying cool.

Ran back  just as the door closed so annoying

this happened three times

before he gave up having to go up six floors

as he got to the floor level

the lift had arrived first out of breath cursed

as to himself conversed!

Down the corridor saw what looked like a nurse

approaching went to speak

but they proceeded to fade and then disappear

his mate had not made it yet

confounded wearily moved to number fifty-one

but actually wanted to run!

Dropped the gear exhausted heard heavy footsteps

expected to see his tired friend

coming closer but there was nobody to be seen

yet was sure somebody was close

feeling oppressed the atmosphere seemed choking

with his emotions stroking!

Standing afraid to move his mate staggered his way

surprisingly jovial and spoke

wondering why he looked so scared and miserable

struggling to utter even a word

could not understand why he did not perceive

made his excuses had to leave!

Almost falling down the stairwell glanced upwards

for a few seconds saw a figure

at the top before making his way to the outside

petrified as he got to his car

promising himself never again to enter within

for he feared what resided herein!

Many stories continue to be told about the asylum!

So Pale!

Admittedly a lot pints of beer was consumed

though he would not admit

that alcohol had addled his mind and vision

she did walk from the shadows

tall all in black so pale with blood on lips

dropping from her chin in drips!

Shocked tripped hit his head on a metal post

when he woke was there alone

friends searching found him helping home

here related what he saw

when earlier while passing the playground

turned when hearing  a sound!

Kept saying it was a vampire but they all laughed

he was classed as the fool

you were just drunk his mates said laughing

yet he was a terrified man

the bad dreams kept recurring each one worse

with him none would converse!

Afraid to leave his house after darkness descended

thinking maybe it was the drink

after months was persuaded to venture to a club

the encounters while sleeping

had stopped now sure it was in his imagination

just his own drunken creation!

With the intention to never being blotto again

the evening was uneventful

so good not to be the centre of fun any more

having just a couple of lagers

decided to leave early taking the same route

glad he went it was a hoot.

Nervous kept checking that nobody was about

tired quickly settled in bed

sleep came easy and then had an awful dream

the women was in the room

she came ever closer he was totally paralysed

waking it was now he realised!

This time it was happening the pain excruciating

but he could make no sound

the hauntingly attractive vampire stood wide

his blood around her mouth

it had been true his eyes glazed was this the end

not for him his body did transcend!

It went dark suddenly felt a surge woke painless

and a terrible thirst not for food

standing by him was the tall mysterious women

who took his hand it was good

leaving together she had chosen her latest mate

the blood lust could accelerate!

Those who doubted his sanity and integrity

with their lives would pay!

Now he was so pale!

Old Canal Bank!

They thought it was just a large cat on the grass

by the old canal bank

drawing near the object dived into the water

large ripples spread outwards

yet silence remained creating an atmosphere

that deep-seated fear!

All seemed so natural the same familiar scene

over the surprise walked on

continuing chatting along the narrow tow path

reaching their favourite seat

facing the murky water the object was again sat

thinking maybe a big rat!

How they tried to ignore this persistent entity

there ominously not moving

to their dismay it was soon joined by another

that slid onto the bank

this was definitely bigger it began to slither

as their nerve began to wither!

Realising there was danger they began to run

knowing the short cut out

back onto the bustling rush hour town centre

with unprecedented speed

the now visible snake-like creature  attacked

the momentum they lacked!

The last to go was caught and swallowed whole

witnessing this appalling event

three friends stumbled away in complete terror

as the smaller beast lunged

tearing at a young girls foot she screamed pain

breaking free before it bit again!

Reaching what they hoped was a safe location

stood on the bridge looking down

upon the now tranquil canal below their feet

with no signs or undulations

what were they why had it killed their mate

for him help was too late!

Now in and on the canal bank nothing stirred!
