The Door!

There was the key he had lost some years ago

that fitted the rusting lock

belonging to the door at the top of narrow stairs

in his dead uncle’s house

that was told by him every visit never to go near

how inside wanted to peer!

Now in his thirties the warning clearly remembered

his aunt within still resided

had found the key in the uncle’s study desk draw

fear had never left him

took it home on a hook in his own kitchen placed

soon noticed it had been misplaced!

After searching for a while puzzled where it was

was distracted with other thoughts

now confronted with the keys re-appearance

renewed his long-lost fears

realising the time was here to face his own past

decided to open the door at last!

At his uncle’s house his aunt sat so frail and old

let her know he was there

then took his long dreaded steps to the door

the dust made him cough

spiders cobwebs made his blood pressure high

his childhood nightmare was nigh!

With his mind screaming to leave right away

turned the key pushed it open

an awful odour made him retch as he faltered

fumbled for a light switch

could not find one yet the wall seemed so wet

stood helpless with regret!

More use to the darkness the landing light shone

creating creepy odd shadows

he became aware of something near the window

that had been blacked out

metal bars screwed in front something slithered

sinking to the floor his strength withered!

And on top of him was a monstrous drooling freak

with a deep throaty voice spoke

welcome home brother aunty said you were coming

in the doorway she stood

glad you to have met at long last she closed the door

nothing was heard of him anymore!

His cries for help were never heard!

Never!

Never being on time getting up ever later

the excuse today to cold

eventually his partner placed cold feet

on his back he soon got up

realising it was later now he had to rush

leaving the house in a hush.

Forgot to put the car in the large garage

was covered in a thick frost

swearing under his breath it was his fault

now he was definitely late

turning the ignition key it would not start

then an explosion blew it apart!

From her slumber the wife abruptly roused

into a nightmare of reality

glass flying across the large front bedroom

their two children crying

not understanding what caused the havoc

sadly there was no turning back!

Struggling to stand her feet cut and bleeding

glanced out acrid smoke rose

she saw the flames and burning wrecked car

but had to be with the children

holding back the tears she knew he was dead

glanced at the double bed!

In their room the children cowered bewildered

running up to their mother

almost knocking her to the ground gripping tight

there they stayed for some time

then the expected knock on the door she knew

for Josh nothing could they do!

Her husband had been a soldier only a year before

the army and civilian police

were investigating who could have been involved

but their lives had to continue

they could not stay in that house not safe any more

the memories forever raw!

Turning The Key!

It had been a long shift she was glad to be home

as usual placed the key in the lock

yet this time turning the key seemed harder

it opened stiffly in her mind

now was on alert feeling very uncomfortable

usually calm and at ease as a rule!

Hesitating outside her own apartment door

silly she thought boldly entered

nothing out of place or signs of a break in

but tonight it was so  wrong

turned on the disc player for a distraction

lighten the mood have fun!

Heated up a meal she had prepared earlier

being tired got ready for bed

seemed cooler than normal heating was on

it was a cold December night

remembering it was warm when she came in

the nightmare would soon begin!

Never had any problems before though told

awhile before she bought it

heard rumours drug dealers used it for deals

but happily here for two years

nothing was confirmed this was her home

now sensed something did roam!

Almost reluctant now to retire for the night

but the hour had become late

approaching the bed noticed an indentation

as if somebody laid there

she froze then before here eyes it was gone

the urge to run strong!

Though unseen was sure there was a presence

dreading it she half turned

it was as if somebody had quickly passed by

like a blurry human shape

more noise now came the from the bathroom

entering a black shape did loom!

The bath taps running the air was ice-cold

she could take no more

grabbed what she could made for the door

at first would not open

panic consumed her wrestling with the catch

her strength no match!

She screamed in frustration and fear of her life

then it opened with force

not stopping found herself on the pavement

glancing up at her window

a person was looking down the image raw

she never entered any more!

To this day nobody will purchase this apartment!

What had triggered these events?

Destiny!

Within his hand he held that small key

that could guide him to his destiny!

A medium had brought him to this spot

this could be his one and only shot.

Fate awaited him the young man knew

as that excitement quickly grew!

Given a map by a man he was guided to

he knew this he would see through.

Now at a desk in this second-hand shop

that had a badly scratched top.

Informed it had a secret compartment

with a letter written on parchment.

He now had an idea for what he was searching

the adventure would now begin!

The words written in a very ancient dialect

something else for him to reflect.

As he stood pondering who could read it

failure this he would not admit!

The shop owner kindly asked if he could assist

the question he could not resist.

To enquire  if he could read this strange text

the answer yes no longer perplexed.

Written it seemed many centuries before

listening wanting to know more.

His name mentioned a descendant of a knight

and hidden treasure out of sight!

Gold diamonds and a precious sacred cross

in battle his life was a great loss!

Now the next stage a dangerous journey abroad

to seek out this secret priceless hoard!

How could he find the money to finance this trip

could this be the first major slip?

Then he glanced upon some old coins inside

now I am really on my way he cried!

Would he find his destiny at the journey’s end

on the obstacles he faced it would depend!

Into the hostile world he happily ventured!
