Pondered!

He pondered why was the motorway empty

during the busy time of day

even the vehicles behind stopped overtaking

coming to a service area pulled in

but nobody was here the place void of life

not even his radio worked now

panic set in it was as though only he existed

into another dimension drifted!

Could see the entrance there was a brightness

felt compelled to walk to it

sensed no more fear or doubt as he advanced

focused on the building ahead

that was shimmering brought deep peace within

then realized he was no longer alone

smiling a young woman stood on his right side

at each other both seemed mystified!

On the busy motorway the carriageways blocked

emergency crews fighting to release

a young man from his crushed car and on its roof

in the ambulance a twenty something

woman lay unconscious intubated on a drip feed

but heart stopped now unresponsive

paramedics shaken as to her injuries did succumb

as this was not the expected outcome!

The male cut free placed him in a second ambulance

but his vital signs were faint

regrettably his heart to stopped and he was deceased

there had been no other casualties

with a sombre mood amongst all the attending crews

the scene was left for investigation

their bodies taken to the hospital pathology department

the paramedics for them both did lament!

Neither of them had any recollection of a fatal accident

as together held each others hand

the doors opened they stepped into pure serene light

before them a tunnel and glorious sound

filled with a peace glided in love and untainted delight

their souls freed they were heaven bound!

Hikers!

The mixed group of hikers felt a slight tremor

as the wind picked up

on a desolate icy and snow filled wilderness

lost as the heavy snow

hit their bodies as the temperature dropped

it would be foolish if they stopped!

Finally found a sheltered area safe to camp

protection from the elements

though some equipment lost on the trail

had enough supplies for now

six-men and women huddled in a tent

it would be a night of torment!

It had been reported bright lights were seen

falling from the swirling clouds

the night before the hikers passed through

from details on investigation

during the atrocious storm they left the tent

for some unknown intent!

More hikers alerted the rescue authorities

after finding the deserted camp

there seemed to be no signs of any struggle

search parties were formed

finding their mangled corpses what desire

going out only in night attire!

None being alive at first it was thought bears

the culprit of a despicable act

injuries caused by a weapon not any claws

covered all the bodies

but what had drawn them out into such cold

would the truth ever be told?

No tracks beside the victims could be detected

adding to this enigma

many reported feeling nauseated on the recovery

and were glad to leave

sensing whatever had done this was very nearby

they to could easily die!

Tests carried out later gave them more surprises

tissue and fluid samples found

were not of human origin adding to the conundrum

many years later unsolved

few would ever venture to the area no locals dared

either sensible or truly scared!

Camp Fire!

On that chilly cold moonlit autumn night

friends sat by a camp fire

to keep warm and tell ghost stories

the lads full of male bravado

natural sounds amplifying the mood

the language loud and crude!

The group of five now eagerly waited

for Tom the eldest to start

then a distant flash of light lit his face

showing a monstrous outline

flinching backwards yelling in surprise

watching with suspicious eyes!

In a quiet voice his macabre tale began

five years ago on holiday

with my parents and younger brother

decided to explore a cave

over slippery and sharp rocks we scaled

at the entrance exhausted exhaled!

Outside of the cave  hot with a sea breeze

but within dark and menacing

both faltered being reluctant to venture in

not wanting to be called scared

into the natural chamber we ran side by side

footsteps echoing it was ebb tide.

Unaware of time wandered into the unknown

deeper bats were flying around

my brother wanted to leave to me adventure

there was a sound like moaning

in the dim light movement a few feet ahead

of course I had to onward tread!

My brother froze afraid to come with me

a few paces on there stood

what looked like a skeleton dressed in rags

coming towards me then vanish

turned grabbed my brother and we ran fast

on the cave wall a shadow cast!

It was not ours the sunlight did not come within

but now it was flood tide

the water was rising higher making it a hazard

cutting ourselves on the rocks

being afraid the monster would follow us back

our courage now did lack!

Our parents more concerned about our injuries

so no mention of our fright

a wolf  howled on cue as he gave a final evil laugh

the only other willing to tell

was Jack the youngest amongst them at seventeen

who was chirpy and  keen!

As he said his first words the wood sparked loudly

and a flame shot in the air

a sudden noise nearby made his voice quiver

last year while out walking

on my own after a heated row with my girlfriend

wanting our relationship to end!

Saw a car ahead on fire as I drew near exploded

glancing inside there was a body

nearby an injured woman lay semi conscious

carefully checked how she was

then called for urgent assistance to the spot

moving her from the car it was hot!

They soon arrived and I went to guide them

but as the ambulance stopped

the crew got out and asked what was wrong

in disbelief said about the car

both looked puzzled following their gaze

nothing was there but a faint haze!

Abruptly stopping as there was like footsteps

yet nothing visible the fire went out

one week later a search party found the five

four were pronounced dead

a faint groan was heard from one Jack

he was rushed quickly back!

It seemed the other four had died of fright

what had done this during the night!

Jack never woke up again to tell them!

Epitaph!

Frank was an ordinary hard-working man

leaving school at fifteen

finding work in a garage where he stayed

doing an apprenticeship

settling down with Jenny for a good life

happily never any strife.

I knew them well I met a nice young woman

we often went out together

he had three children my spouse and I four

the years were pretty good

my route took me into the medical field

nice to see people healed.

Lost contact for sometime I got divorced

next we met was a surprise

it was while on duty said his Jenny was ill

in the intensive care unit

later heard she had passed from this life

his precious wonderful wife.

After the funeral tried to keep in touch

but our worlds had changed

read in the paper he had won the lottery

what amount had no idea

really pleased for him deserving a break

and for the children’s sake!

Last I heard moved away to the south coast

bought a nice little bungalow

a real shame it came too late for his partner

but now could play more golf

both about the same age that I remember

heard sad news last December!

Maybe the hazard of winning the money

burglars broken in one night

thinking no doubt there was much to take

the place was ransacked

received awful injuries never recovered

a day before being discovered!

It was Frank’s daughter who contacted me

though saw it on the news

a genuine hard-working man taken to early

by those where greed ruled

the mind-set was just their material  greed

no remorse leaving him to bleed!

This my Epitaph for Frank just a nice ordinary man!
