Beneath!

None of them realised what lay beneath

in the nebulous caverns below

created by the incalculable mining shafts

zigzagging beneath the ground

where repulsive creatures had nested

unknown now totally infested!

The heavy rain caused saturation of fields

weakening the infrastructure

few realised the fragile surface eroding

existing in their daily routines

unaware of the approaching catastrophe

of which none could foresee!

Not in recorded history had it been so bleak

floods engulfed communities

rainfall increased authorities unable to cope

water seeping up from below

thinking the situation could not get worse

their position became perverse!

The ground beneath their feet now gave way

and the population fell into hell

the rout of humankind an unexpected horror

soon they would discover

those who had survived the brutal carnage

faced a demonic rampage!

Laying injured beasts spawned in darkness

rapidly violated their flesh

hiding out of the light as those able to move

ran blindly in every direction

but they were overwhelmed by the specter

of life were no respecter!

Some managed to reach the surface for help

received by military forces

who were preparing a major rescue attempt

uncertain of what to expect

before entering into the hostile environment

cautiously made their descent

Soon confronting beasts of an unknown origin

agile in the mud and blackness

unprepared for the battles and horrors to follow

thousands perished that first day

as the soldiers hurriedly retreated from a real hell

of which few survived to tell!

Not mythical flesh-eating fiends but an uncontrollable evil

festered beneath their feet!

Settlers!

On the plains of the vast unexplored country

families had come as settlers.

Searching a new start from their homeland

realising hardships ahead.

Into the wilderness of a hostile environment

was their mutual intent!

Their only belongings stored in their wagon

just one of a long train.

No comforts only heartache along the trail

dying an every day event!

Raids by indigenous indian’s a constant threat

but they’d never admit regret.

An unmapped territory never before explored

with only their courage.

Many with faith in their god to keep them safe

from far-flung nations.

Seeking a better life in an unforgiving culture

as overhead flew the vulture!

Days of searing heat as man and animals dropped

countless miles of dust.

Then the torrents of pitiless rain and flash floods

left them with nothing!

Yet the survival instinct drove them to their goal

despite the eventual toll!

Creating a nation to this day that is loved and hated

by different parts of our world.

Influenced by the suffering of those early settlers

determined foolish and brave.

Carving their names in the history books of mankind

today how are their endeavours defined?

As our society reaches terminal velocity!
