Biting Wind!

The gate swung slowly on creaky hinges

as a biting wind blew

the woodwork rotting some was burnt

cracked churned up path

led to a shabby drab riverside habitat

out buildings collapsed flat!

Felt more like winter though a spring day

rain fell on a rising river

adjacent to a rear garden in disarray

a bird lay decomposing

on the rusting roof water droplets dripped

in rhythmic beats fear gripped!

The air whistled around the building

the cold chilling the bones

a hiker decided to stop here for a rest

unaware of its gruesome history

yet felt the isolated location undertone

alone with no chaperone!

Had become lost along the river trail

the sun was going down

had no signal on her new smart phone

not told anybody of the trip

approaching up the dry cracked pathway

near the alleged haunted red bay!

Though it seemed abandoned was disturbed

that there was a presence

unable to go on fatigued her energy drained

had been warm so not prepared

to spend a long night here in the wilderness

there was an unearthly stillness!

Soon as the sun had set scratching noises

permeated around her position

as if a creature was trying to get inside

she had no torch to see anything

wooden walls tin roof shook and rattled

as inner demons battled!

Were her eyes playing tricks as she sat

shivering in this rickety shack

sound of lapping water getting louder

in the doorway a shape stood

light footsteps neared a gurgling groan

something snapped her hyoid bone!

Her body dragged to the water discarded

and into the flowing river

motionless was propelled in the current

found days later by a warden

on routine patrol of this vast national park

the find shocking and stark!

Another victim to add to the countless others

discovered over the decades

unsolved murders that had no known motive

the same cause neck broken

nobody had linked their deaths to the old cabin

where its said a hermit had dwelled within!

Who was hunted down being linked to evil forces

hung and burnt but made a curse

that anybody entering his own sacred domain

would meet their certain end

thought of as just more meaningless folklore

locals this place would never explore!

Simply!

The bottle simply fell off the high shelf

as the barmaid poured a drink

this was in the lounge bar of a hotel

grade one listed building

with a history of phenomena reported

and stories of love thwarted!

Much had been proved to be natural

sounds created by the wood

creaking expanding and contracting

drafts from old windows

letting cold air chill the weary visitor

who had not been here before!

To those staff who had been here awhile

they had got more use to it

though parts of the hotel were off limit

they were scared to enter

shadows and sensations of dread within

tested their professional discipline!

An ancient coaching inn with a dark past

extended over the centuries

main route to London saw highwaymen

regularly robbing stage coaches

villains often hanged passengers killed

to those near the bones it chilled!

Items thrown or going missing routine

but the recording was proof

an entity roamed the bars and corridors

blurry but it looked like a female

in flowing dress came into view gliding

for them the proof providing!

Also seen in the upper bedrooms area

others had said they had seen

bodies hanging from a gnarled oak tree

in the cobbled courtyard

so many hidden secrets still to be told

gruesome terrors to behold!

The inn drew the curios and series investigator

amateur and professional facilitator!

Dog Walk!

It was a pleasant sunny and warm sunday

the couple were out walking

on a trail with their two labrador puppies

who were a long way ahead

chatting happily hand in hand without care

the day together did share!

Neither noticing the tree foliage thickening

or that nobody had passed

it was their weekends that they enjoyed

only just moving to the village

no knowledge of this part of the rural wood

in which they now stood!

If  they had spoken to any local in the village

maybe a different route

might have been chosen for this rest day walk

a beast that roamed here

visitors had been found badly mutilated within

was another killing about to begin?

Of course there was no warning neither knew

first hint of any trouble

the barking stopped and yelp’s of pain and fear

came from their pets ahead

then no noise could be heard only rustling trees

from calmness to unease!

A strong urge to run but not without their dogs

in turmoil heard a bark

together headed towards the faint pitiful sound

approaching saw blood and fur

there one of the pups stood over the remains

itself covered in blood stains!

Hesitant to go near being an unexpected scene

shaken by the gruesome sight

the pet snarled as if daring them to come closer

movement surrounding them

certain in the shadows something was observing

the terror increasingly disturbing!

Slowly backing away from the agitated puppy

thinking was it really a killer

a presence then showed itself coming into view

from behind a rotting tree stump

a huge black cat appeared fiery red eyes stared

and fanged teeth bared!

Claws in the ground did plough lunging forward

snatched the small dog

throwing it to one side the woman screamed

as it was flight or die

without thought through undergrowth crashed

on a rock her head bashed!

Her husband struggling to pick up her still body

as he blindly tripped on

then saw the trail once more felt the breath

of the beast on his heels

exhausted rapid heart beat clothes and skin

ripped just had to win!

In sight the edge of the tree line was visible

adrenaline drove him ever on

but exhaustion overtook him he collapsed

on the ground they lay

like discarded rag dolls sprawled in the dirt

broken and seriously hurt!

Eventually would be found yet another chapter

in the woods rural legend

but there was no clues found a major factor

for cause of injury a story without end!

Basement Flat!

The body had just been carefully removed

from the scene of the murder.

Two rooky police officers were left to guard

the  scene at the basement flat.

Uneasy being near this gruesome crime

the woman killed in her prime.

It was a unseasonally cold frosty night

the flat had been locked.

They stood by the railings at street level

music could be heard nearby.

The policewoman casually turned around

and at the window lower ground.

Was sure there was some movement inside

told her colleague who smiled.

knowing nobody was in the basement flat

suggesting it was imagination.

Convinced she had seen it anxiety grew

somebody was there she knew!

Walking up and down the street both bored

heard an urgent tapping sound!

Reaching the railings it came from below

was somebody breaking in?

Both ran down the steep steps of stone

surprised they were alone!

Yet the sealed door was unlocked and open

entering with extreme caution.

The male officer saw the flickering light

fading he went to investigate!

Leaving the female in the small bedroom

filled with sadness and gloom.

There was a a blood spattered mirror in front

of where she was standing.

And beside her she could see the young victim

silently shouting arms held out.

Turning nobody was there screaming she ran

and up the steps as fast as she can!

Soon her shaken colleague was right by her side

as he too could not explain.

What was going on in the basement flat so left

not mentioning what she saw!

The rest of their shift neither wanted to speak

but an answer she would seek!

The police officer has still not seen anybody

about the image in the mirror!

And the killer has not been caught to this day

nor tenants rent the basement flat.

It remains dejected and boarded up tight

even vandals don’t enter the site!
