Green Hills!

From the top of those steep sloping green hills

they sat relaxed on horseback to marvel

in awe at the natural beauty of unspoilt land

uncorrupted by the destruction of progress

taking away the virginity of the landscape

where creatures safely interacted unharmed

by callous hands in pursuit of their immoral gain

the countryside balance they did not retain!

With no tall grotesque buildings to sully the view

nor chimneys from factories regularly

spewing more deadly toxins to choke our lungs

above air clear from human impregnation

from more suspected elements of depopulation

weather harsh but the seasons defined

there before pollution and technology encased

our lives and the nightmare future to face!

Impulse!

It was on impulse he stopped he thought

this thundery night as the rain fell

in a blinding lightning flash was certain

something was standing ahead

that moment of dread overwhelmed him

certain this was no imaginary whim!

Had only one pint with a meal an hour ago

was feeling fine until now

decided to drive on the car would not start

then all the electrics failed

now really scared he just watched the storm

another flash closer a shape did form!

It looked like a woman in a white nightgown

long straggly dark hair

soaked the head bowed standing in the road

thinking she was distressed

yet that gut instinct was telling him to stop

this was but a false backdrop!

Another loud thunder-clap and bright flash

now stood close to the bonnet

head was raised exposing a grotesque face

skeletal in its appearance

at this shocking image there was no escape

what really was the monstrous shape?

Frenzy overwhelmed him he was trapped

pulling at the door handle

until his hands bled he started to go mad

another flash nothing was there

until he sensed movement from behind

for his fate was resigned!

With an almighty clap of thunder he knew

it was with him in the car

nobody heard his muffled pitiful screams

as beside him the thing sat

his heart and mind could take it no more

as the rain outside did pour!

As daylight broke the storm had abated

a passing farmer found him

lights and engine running on the roadway

glancing in saw the expression

of terror slumped pale staring wide-eyed

he was all alone inside!

Alerted!

It was the swinging hallway light flex

alerted him all was not well

as he waited could not feel any draft

just wanted to leave now

in his girlfriends house always scared

though this he had not shared!

He loved the sweet girl he met at college

not her parents Victorian house

always gave him a cold chill as he entered

knew it held a dark secret

always glad to leave its oppressive grip

always tasting blood on his lip!

Relieved to see his beautiful girl ready to go

breathed again outside the door

that crawling sensation of being observed

from the attic window lingered

was always afraid to raise his head to see

scared made him want to pee!

Had to be love surely to face the daily ordeal

but one day had to tell her

it had become an obsession he could not hide

to his surprise she felt it to

since she was very young had feared the night

always afraid to turn off her light!

From under her bed she often heard scratching

a clawed hand gripped the bedding

sometimes mum told her to turn the light off

then it stood in full view

often she screamed and her parents came

for a time with her did remain!

But in the end when nothing was ever found

said it was just her imagination

so had to face it on her own until it attacked

violently grabbing her arm

pulling and ripping flesh on skin exposed

the truth at last disclosed!

They were sitting in a cafe telling her story

even here he was afraid

as she explained they had to seek refuge

in a neighbour’s house that night

as the family fled from their own dwelling

what would happen no foretelling!

Before they could re-enter an exorcism

on the property performed

for a while all seemed to be normal again

but the hauntings returned

then realised she was the one possessed

had come to feel blessed!

Shaken these words he could not believe

but in the corner booth

her face became grotesque his soul lost

silently the teenager left

leaving the corpse sitting as if sleeping

neck broken heart not beating!

Nobody noticed the pretty girl leave alone

innocently talking on her cell phone!

Soldier!

He sat alone in the train compartment

it was during war-time

the soldier was on leave from the army

had witnessed the abhorrence

of warfare and his friends lives ended

their funerals attended!

As he sat deep in thought became aware

in the seat opposite

by the window a frail looking woman sat

weeping very quietly

gasped certain nobody else was in there

this compartment to share!

The light was poor as it was the black out

how cold he now felt

sound of bombs dropping in the distance

already very stressed

could only stare at his unexpected visitor

that he could not ignore!

There was nowhere for him to run away

a no corridor train

on this old trundling commuter train

he was stuck here

did not fancy jumping onto the line

this decided to decline!

But suddenly the shape distorted

the face became clear

now saw the black eyes glaring

the once human features

changed into a grotesque outline

his sanity unable to define!

A loud scream like a banshee wail

made him reel away

running to the left locked door

pounding the glass

as it smashed his flesh was torn

shouting as if others to warn!

The train slowly screeched to a halt

station staff ran to his aid

upper body lay over the broken door

they helped him out

in the carriage nobody else was there

to them an odd affair!

Later in hospital his wounds tended

he was unconscious

eventually when he was able to speak

nothing could he recall

but in his mind the image did remain

thought was he going insane?

From then on felt a vile presence near!

Foolish!

It was foolish but when you’re young

danger means having fun

the gates to the crypt were locked

a moment of guilt passed

as my entry was solved by a stone

forever would I try to atone!

The rusted gates noisily swung open

it was dark deathly silent

entering the crypt tripping on coffins

was most unpleasant

thinking maybe treasure was in here

should not have drunk the beer!

At the time had no sense of any fear

cold damp nasty odours

the adrenaline rush of an illegal act

with bare hands pushing

stone slabs annoyed at no progress

wanted to get access!

Fumbling in the poor light the flooring

gave way beneath my feet

instantly fell into a lower chamber

filled with putrid bodies

not fully decomposed surrounding me

still no idea how I got free!

Wanting to wretch covered in the slime

staggered out into the air

mortified at what had just happened

saw a grotesque face

and skeletal body in the tomb entrance

felt the instant penitence!

That was before running around certain

it was pursuing me

hatred was so real amongst the graves

even now years on

the presence is real it watches constantly

never more to let me be!

From that time on sounds heard shapes seen

nobody dared go on their own

unless in groups keeping away from the scene

or be scratched and objects thrown!

Imposing!

It had an imposing image for a new hospital

though in developement accidents

during construction of the district infirmary

even on its opening day

injuries caused by more structural damage

was annoying at this stage!

Nothing would get in the way of the progress

prestige pride most of all money

forced the building on no matter the sacrifice

only a few knew the real truth

how it was pushed through breaking the law

not for a second did they pause!

The land was not of a suitable consistency

as beneath it had been excavated

some years before an object was retrieved

quickly by an unknown group

who arrived rapidly taking it from the site

in the middle of a summer’s night!

Locals were never informed of what it was

or who had whisked it away

rumours of an alien craft and high radiation

were never answered

it had always had a mystical evil reputation

and a strong feeling of intimidation!

Nobody would go near the open land in fear

so it caused a huge debate

when the new hospital was then approved

now the day was finally here

its doors were opened and with trepidation

entered with a nervous hesitation!

Impressed by the splendour they gathered

in the huge entrance lobby

the medical director was on a raised podium

cynically smiling at them

the commotion was faint at first few heard

soon none could hear a word!

Staff not at the opening started shouting

as if warning of danger

screams became shrill as the groups met

mayhem rapidly ensued

creatures like large moths were overhead

swooping as people fled!

Grabbing anybody with their long claws

taking them up high

dropping them on to the polished floor

crashing onto the crowd

those who could get out were attacked

beasts with weapons hacked!

From the grounds other snake-like things

slid towards those trapped

senior directors tried to make a getaway

found there was no escape

with so many of the dignitaries present

were hell bound sent!

As it had begun it ended the beasts vanished

leaving devastation behind

everyone concerned with its creation had gone

the hospital was unsafe

those still alive got away never to return here

a supernatural power involved clear!

It now stands abandoned a reminder of events

a grotesque cursed building

that only the foolish would even contemplate

approaching let alone enter

strange sightings and weird sounds reported

sceptics say natural sounds distorted!

No explanation for the events have been given

for investigators their curiosity is driven!

The Foureyed Poet.

The Brick Wall!

The couple thought it must be cheaper

modernise in their own design

as the debts started getting steeper

then no indication or sign

but unable to find one at the right price

just the thought was very nice.

Weeks passed wondering if they’d find

their home to renovate

or how their lives would be maligned

and what kind of state

somebody had a property for sale

was this the end of the trail?

From the first viewing they truly loved it

and set about their task

though in the basement had to admit

each had to wear a mask

an unpleasant smell lingered there

but couldn’t find where!

The drains it was thought the cause

not easy having to stay here

to save every penny couldn’t pause

but the fun began to disappear

a brick wall blocked their progress

and did look grotesque!

Deciding to finish the rest of the house

before starting on the wall

noticing tapping sounds in the night

below a shadow did crawl

they went down stairs hearing a cry

scary they could not deny!

Loud scratching noises were very clear

coming from the basement

with joint trepidation both did peer

not wanting to make a descent

but felt impelled to solve the enigma

a mystery here did stir!

Petrified found themselves  standing

in front of the brick wall

a sledgehammer there demanding

a powerful urge it must fall

hidden strength made the man strike

what her laid they did dislike?

Reeling back in disgust and disbelief

two decomposing bodies sat

even they felt overwhelming grief

no way expecting that

soon it was another major crime scene

a dream that might have been!

The house remains the bricks still lay

from the wall today

the mystery remains who they were

as strange things still occur!

The Sea Fog!

The fog over the sea was unusually dense

to the locals in the small village

that lay on the coast it was ominous

this was no natural sea fog

stories handed down told of a terrible past

of a curse on the people cast!

That every twenty-five years came the fog

dense and glowing it would come

when the villagers went in they vanished

as something within took them away

once more a reality not a story being told

there came a breeze so cold!

Two hundred families lived in the community

fishermen and their families

the same number for five hundred centuries

they were the trapped ancestors

silently villagers culled in the glowing fog

no sound not even a barking dog!

The legend was of the long dead coming back

in the red glowing sea fog

because of what the village ancestors had done

wrecking a ship on the rocks

to plunder and kill those still alive on board

through greed take away the hoard!

The few who survived swore they would return

every century to get their revenge

for all the innocent souls taken that evil night

the village was forever cursed

this was the anniversary the fifteenth of December

when this generation would remember!

The priest of the little church upon the steep hill

a descendant of the wreckers leader

who was the one that had researched the truth

knowing that under the wooden floor

still lay most of the stolen sailing ships haul

they would return until they had it all!

In the fog the long dead walked once more

anybody they met would die

but if you stayed in and ignored the knock

for them they would be well

those who opened the door would perish

no more life to cherish!

Alone in the old church the fog for him came

he knew what it wanted

grotesque figures trying to get in his domain

the house of his god

there the priest prepared for his passage to hell

defiantly he rang the brass bell!

The sea fog entered as a sword cut him down

at the time the ship hit the rocks

then slowly receded back out to the deep-sea

the bell silent the priest had been taken

for now satisfied their curse was partly fulfilled

treasure not retrieved but the priest killed!

The village mourned those who had gone

life there once more carried on!

The wife of the priest gave birth to a son!
