Morgue!

It seemed an inexplicable place even for the dead!

Grave yard shift was never the favourite to get

even to the senior technician

he could easily recall many strange events

but on this particular shift

it would change his conception of reality

that none could foresee!

The only morgue in the small state county

based in the town hospital

always busy yet this night unusually quiet

then a telephone message

telling them a corpse was to be delivered

for some reason both shivered!

Just two on duty upon this dreaded shift

and five silent guests

one lay under a white sheet for an autopsy

early the coming morn

the new arrival would upset the ambience

the pressure becoming intense!

Around mid night the swing doors burst open

their new guest wheeled in

quickly placed in the allotted storage fridge

awaiting the duty pathologist

no details given even the paper work lacking

unanswered questions stacking!

That oppressive awareness began to mutate

retreating to the rest room

for a well-earned break at the mid night hour

soon a tapping sound heard

reverberating like a drum through corridors

their conversation on pause!

It stopped for a while then started once more

like a fist knocking on a door

reluctantly decided to investigate the source

as the noise wearily persisted

both re-entered the dimly lit autopsy room

they glared into the gloom!

Just as it went quiet again standing shaking

nothing looked disturbed

relieved turned there was a very loud bang

ran to the doorway before

daring to see it was the fridge open wide

the one with the body inside!

Neither of them wanting to move nearer

but were curious to view

even in the blue-tinted night lighting

could see the tray empty

on the tiled floor the abandoned body bag

along with the name tag!

Where had it gone more knocking began

it was definitely in front

uncertain of what was actually happening

headed for the only exit

could not escape their door passes failed

within their work place jailed!

Plunged into darkness something approached

as the emergency lighting

came on they were confronted by a woman

in her chest a gaping wound

how could she be alive the last words expelled

as to the ground were felled!

One managed badly wounded to crawl away

hitting the fire alarm button

waking in the casualty unit shaken in pain

but certain he was still alive

chaos surrounded him and he knew why

the thing that could not die!

It had escaped what had been unleashed on society

He suddenly began to feel unwell!

Poison!

For some reason as he turned towards his partner

his stomach churned he felt pain

their eyes met he could see the hate and coldness

black as coal a penetrating stare

she did not know he had found out about her affair

somehow he was sure didn’t care!

It had been the trend all through their long marriage

he had done his best never stayed

not in his nature to cheat it had crossed his mind

now often wish he’d left long ago

too soft accepted it but as the pain raged he realised

some plan she had devised!

For weeks started to lose energy and become weak

she had become very attentive

and it dawned on him she must be using poison

the latest lover must be important

hate had eventually bubbled over he was in the way

with his life would have pay!

She had even taken the cell phone from beside him

never been contained before

confined to his bedroom could often hearing voices

her new man was installed

determined he would not be an easy victim to kill

had his own agenda to fulfill!

Heard her leave early on a bright summers morning

had an inner strength a new hate

no point loving the woman who wanted him to perish

summoned the energy to rise

tried the land line telephones there was no ring tone

her callousness could not condone!

He could only assume they thought it would be soon

the poison his life devour

each step became a battle of his own determination

making it into the kitchen

headed for the back door needed the suns rays

this would not be his end of days!

On the rear porch caught site of a freshly dug grave

his spouse was very confident

her task was nearly complete and the plot visible

it would not be him buried there

managed to find the key to his shot-gun collection

relying now on his own protection!

Prepared himself for their return and his surprise

drinking plenty of water waited

now hiding in a shady place constantly nauseous

revenge became the only thought

once an isolated ranch which together had chose

finally the relationship had to close!

At last he heard the truck coming back closing fast

watching it pull up close by

without further thought aimed and then discharged

instantly his wife and lover fell

the hole made for him was certainly not wasted

those who dug it lay there instead!

A nice small garden on the spot looked very nice

a distressed husband played the part

reporting the wife he loved had left without trace

months later nothing was heard

he discretely left for a long trip never to return

for him nobody had concern!

But he retained the ranch and the secret remains!

The Car!

After such a long time he had grown so close

to his reliable elderly car.

His wife nagged him to get a brand new model

no point being defiant.

Much easier to simply comply and agree

that weekend went to see.

From their first step onto the forecourt it began

as a salesman dived in.

Not giving them a chance to browse themselves

guiding them to a new model.

As his wife was engrossed in the smooth patter

he quietly left them to chatter.

And wandered over to the large used car section

where he was able to browse.

Taking time to peruse the wide choice of motors

where he came upon the car!

Fitting his criteria ticking every box on his want list

this motor could not resist.

All was going very well until the wife approached

hands grasping shiny brochures.

His face started to twitch a clear sign of a row

which he got with a vengeance.

His spouse wanted the new untouched motor

not one owned and used before!

Both determined the row continued for some hours

the staff kept well clear.

At last both agreeing this was a sensible upgrade

and the deal was sealed.

Eventually they drove their purchase off the lot

happy at what they had got.

But their excitement really did not last very long

even on the way home.

Both thought they had heard a faint whimpering

and a dull banging sound!

Ignoring these incidents as being of natural origin

the nightmare would soon begin.

Back home as the car was parked and they got out

the engine started on its own.

Even with the key held within the husband’s hand

it then switched off!

Concerned there must be a fault to be found

asked the garage to come around.

Being late could not come until the following day

so unable to do any more.

Disappointed settled down for a quiet night

but at one am the engine started!

He reluctantly went to investigate as it was late

lights blaring no time to debate.

The car door opened intrigued he got to close

and was pulled inside.

The door slammed shut and then it drove off

driven by something unseen!

Holding on tightly to the steering the wheel

it seemed so unreal!

The car was driving itself he was just a passenger

glancing in the rear view mirror.

Was sure somebody was sitting in the back seat

into country roads it careered.

Then swerving across a newly ploughed field

the car eventually did yield!

Sirens he now could hear and blue flashing lights

the door suddenly burst open.

Ahead a man was standing but then disappeared

at the place he saw raised earth!

In the headlight beam he  knew it was a grave site

as the shock began to bite!

The police were soon surrounding him after the chase

assuming he was a dangerous driver.

At first with no idea this was a new murder scene

in an awful state he was quizzed.

He had no explanation of what had taken place

this was a strange case!

There was a body of a middle-aged man buried there

the last car owner was arrested.

Later charged with the murder of a business associate

how he was caught withheld!

The car was kept for evidence so had to get a new one

the wife had in the end won!

He was not charged but life was never the same again.

The Pensioner!

The pensioner heard  loud noises in the night

petrified it was a burglar.

But unwisely looked around the bungalow

yet everything was in place.

Except for the open back door all was still

in his lungs cold air did fill.

Around his wrinkled neck was a button pendent

for summoning urgent support.

Pressing it hard a young voice loudly replied

he could hardly speak.

Telling him to stay calm help was quickly coming

listening to a faint humming!

Shaken by this he sat down on a kitchen chair

staring out into the garden.

He recalled that grave size patch of ground

where nothing would grow.

Often wondering what was below the earth

at this moment felt no mirth!

A door bell ring made him nearly fall off the chair

taking awhile to let them in.

A warden and constable who were concerned

thoroughly checked around.

And seemed satisfied everything was fine

further help he did decline.

Alone once more it was certainly not the same

until now it felt like home.

Now every single sound made him quiver

and focused on the door!

As it re-opened on its own he now saw

like a shadow on the door!

He also had a bad heart this he couldn’t take

collapsing on the grubby floor.

The following day a social worker called

being shocked finding him.

Natural causes the post-mortem revealed

the secret in the ground sealed!

No suspicions aroused at how many died

in this council property.

After all they were all getting very old

so just natural causes!

Whatever was buried an untold mystery

somebody’s dark history!

Soon another elderly resident moved in!

He Said!

He said to his sister who found him dying

from a self-inflicted knife wound

how sorry that he was leaving this way

unable to face life any more

and try to contact from beyond the grave

but no reasons he gave!

Loving her brother thought they were close

never realised he was so sad

regret clouded life as  she waited patiently

to make contact as he said

facts began to emerge of his mounting debt

threats for payment not met!

They were twins and sensed he was unhappy

travelling from her home abroad

hoping she would find him safe and well

that her intuition must be wrong

yet as she approach his apartment entrance

the dread within was immense!

Six long months had passed and still there

just having to stay in his place

putting her life on indefinite hold waiting

for that sign because he said

then a tap on the door rushing to open it

feeling scared she had to admit!

Standing before her a pretty young woman

with a baby held in her arms

crying said she was the brothers girl friend

they’d argued and broke up

not realising at the time she was pregnant

but to come back was her intent!

He still didn’t know she so wanted to tell him

but had no contact from him

knowing his problems found it hard to come

now she knew the awful truth

in the apartment they sat and his baby son

there was a unity of one!

The radio came on with no help from them

a song played they recognised

his favourite and the room became cool

they smelt his after shave

and knew they were not on their own in here

her brother to them was near!

Though her brother had taken his own life

she felt close to his son

the girlfriend moved in it really felt right

and sister stayed knowing

that what he said had really come true

now the family was complete to!

Reminisce!

Often I reminisce at that decision when young

but it was you who left.

Even to this day remember that kiss goodbye

that ruled our progress.

Realising from then it had always been  you

the one I loved true.

Then nothing was taken seriously life was fun

searching our destinies.

Loving someone to us stories and weepy films

and the freedom to roam.

But when maturity sets in you see what’s lost

regretting the personal cost.

Years I searched for the girl I simply let go

that took losing to know.

By chance on a social sight I saw your face

could our past be fulfilled?

Enjoying those years that should have been

if only we had foreseen.

Here now with a bouquet of flowers to give

standing by your grave.

The reunion had come for us just too late

by you I kneel and remember.

That gentle person warm bubbly and sweet

your kiss and smile until we meet.

The sun was shinning and you were there

my precious lady my tears I share!
