Billionaire!

In the king size leather chair at the top of the tower

the billionaire surveyed the city below

now he was the ruler of his kingdom and people

who believed his every word

within his mind and being certain them understood

his intentions its said were good!

Though from unbelievable wealth totally certain

could achieve his full schedule

protecting his subjects from any ruthless enemies

never himself struggling to survive

nor ever evicted from the place he called home

the streets in all weathers to roam!

Accumulating huge debts that you could not repay

or standing in a food bank queue

paying your taxes all of your life but still in debt

not entitled to benefits to ease hardship

sleeping in those wet streets chilling your bones

nobody sympathetic to your groans!

Where even a small coffee is too expensive to buy

walking the only mode to get about

that constant fear of violence or hopelessness near

no warm abode or a safe dry bed

the divide so immense how could he comprehend

to his tower most would not ascend!

Comfortable in his leather chair promised he did care

but his vast fortune would never share!

No!

Where have they gone those days of fun

to be out with the family in the sun

simple times no television families talking

then no fear of monsters stalking

all together each Sunday for dinner and tea

that filled everybody with glee!

No expectations or need for material wealth

or trips to the gym for your health

plenty of plain food and that afternoon walk

happy then to simply sit and talk

computer games and smart phones yet to be

both hands and thoughts free!

Countryside unspoilt with no motorway blight

or endless buildings to block the sight

any news was not broadcast twenty four seven

holidays not abroad but sunny Devon!

but even then warnings of world destruction

were not broadcast like a film production!

Cannot deny it was far from a perfect society

far from that hope of propriety

to me seemed more contained not in your face

life was at a far slower pace

enjoyment was more simple the pressure less

no buzz word then known as stress!

But every decade has its ample recollections

filled with countless imperfections

catastrophes that shape the course of history

distressing cases that remain a mystery

so each new dawn we face a fresh blank day

to see if our lives continue to replay!

No Christmas!

The children sat shivering alone in the house

cold and hungry in a squalid home

no Christmas tree or decorations  were here

in their short lives never known

to have warm clothes and much food to eat

it would be a miraculous treat!

Dad came around to hurt and shout at mum

and was always very drunk

but they saw many uncles coming and going

when their mum was there

never gave any cuddle’s nor showed kindness

they never knew happiness!

Alone once more on the eve of Christmas day

left to see it in with nothing

they only had each other no presents for them

rummaging in the dirty kitchen

such a pitiful sight listening to the happy voices

of neighbouring children with choices!

They held hands staring longingly out the window

hoping a kind person would come

to give them compassion some love and food

their mum did not seem to bother

so tired went to their rubbish strewn bedroom

a drunk mum would soon loom!

As children woke to see what Father Christmas

had brought for each of them

These three little ones dreaded yet another day

empty miserable without care

at a time that is supposed to be filled with joy

on the birthday of a holy boy!

Changing The Rules!

The retail park was bustling with activity

with its shops and restaurants.

Multiplex cinema and a bingo hall to

with vast car parks filling.

Another day of the human daily rituals

nature was changing the rules!

Creatures forced into smaller areas of land

unable to walk natural routes.

Until now the largest predator the fox

it’s food chain now depleted.

Turning to man for the main food source

was the next evolutionary course!

Cunning living up to a revered reputation

adapting to new surroundings.

The once vast countryside ripped apart

integrating with other species.

Escaped large cats becoming acquainted

their DNA mingled and tainted!

Their size grew and instincts heightened

and taste for human flesh!

They now started to roam the park

soon as it became dusk.

A pack  emerged from their hidden lair

all seeing eyes  prey unaware!

The cinema busy likewise places to eat

the smell driving them on.

As aggression rises to striking pitch

a lone male late for a date.

Circled and ambushed by each beast

ready to enjoy the feast!

Dragging him to their underground lair

where mutants gathered.

Mankind seemed oblivious to this threat

as many more went missing!

The creatures numbers rapidly multiplied

man’s dominance defied!

Below the surface the revolution had begun!
