Controlled!

Was she going insane nothing seemed to compute

life controlled by electronic voices

it woke her up at precisely six am every week day

also spoke to her like a human friend

held conversations as she got prepared for work

even the lights and air conditioning

taken care of by Ellen yes even had its own name

they were no longer used for any game!

Her car was self driving she would have no idea

how to operate a vehicle they ruled

mankind totally reliant on artificial intelligence

to organise and execute their lives

until she awoke late as the alarm did not sound

no voice to comfort or turn the lights on

so silent and cold just blank screens to observe

this moment her demeanor it did unnerve!

The shower was cold even the lift did not function

had to walk down fifteen flights of stairs

the car stood in the parking garage without power

flustered actually went out into the air

nothing moved people wandered about bewildered

nobody use to thinking for themselves

her cell phone was of no comfort to give directions

there were no electronic connections!

Far worse was to befall as the first passenger aircraft

dropped out of the sky into buildings

military craft started to enter the streets in force

how they were powered a mystery

crowds started to panic and fighting soon spread

but they were gunned down creating

a stampede of confused souls with nowhere to go

as martial law upon them they did bestow!

Like a watcher the young woman witnessed it happen!

Camping!

Camping on moorland just needed a break

alone with his tent and nature

or that was how it was planned to much on

falling out with partner

solitude was what had always kept him sane

this was how he wanted to remain!

Fresh air and a warm starry night it was good

alone without argument

never able to do the right thing he pondered

sipping his hot coffee

in his own world when he first heard a cry

like an injured animal close by!

Had a walk around his camp but saw nothing

the view was magnificent

sheep and ponies grazed some distance away

it was then nerves came into play

realising the isolation until now had not cared

his very well-being bared!

On the grassy hillside no other human near

close by was swampy ground

saw a walker heading up to his high position

surprised as there was no path

through the water-logged low ground below

seemed to be moving slow!

Looking forward for a chat just sat and waited

then were lost from his view

flustered got up the person he tried to locate

but they had simply gone

knew another night would have to spend here

that was certainly clear!

Began to miss the quarrels he had left to avoid

as the temperature dropped

settling in his tent for one more lonely night

found it hard to relax

odd noises outside made him shiver with dismay

felt he had become the prey!

On the other side of the thin material breathing

well thought it could be

shuffling as if somebody was slowly approaching

almost afraid to take a breath

summoned up the courage to take a quick peek

an explanation to seek!

Cautiously took a look a shape he could just see

red eyes stared back at him

a mist swirled upon the ground what was this

a high-pitched shriek

as the thing charged this was the end he thought

next memory woke distraught!

The tent had gone laid on top of his sleeping bag

at his feet saw hoof marks

in the soft grass here still completely alone

gathered his belongings

just left as quickly as he could physically walk

with other people needed to talk!

A few days later his body was found on a trail path

trampled as if by a hoofed animal

there were no clues to what had actually happened

his wife informed by wallet contents

another death on this land they could not explain

animals were not allowed on the terrain!

The Basement!

She found it hard even finding the office block

expecting to find a modern building

several times walking by the shabby front

it had to be her first day of work

across the thresh hold did step she was late

now in a very flustered state.

Up to the reception desk to ask for the directions

an elderly uniformed man sat

who did not even raise his head when she spoke

telling her it was on level three

rushing to the lift pressed the button and waited

to just go home she debated!

When the lift arrived got in pressing the button

to take her up to the third floor

seconds passed then descended to the basement

not what she had expected

jolted to a halt the doors opened slowly revealing

a dank corridor with low ceiling

Heard a soft voice calling her name stepping out

taken by surprise by the sound

the lift shut and now stood all alone in a nightmare

that pleading voice guided her

amongst discarded equipment and hissing pipes

making her have increasing gripes!

Every shadow seemed a lunging demonic beast

now focused on a greenish hue

collided with a disused filing cabinet then a chair

saw a woman standing there

that faded into thin air only a short distance ahead

her sanity hung by a thread!

Now drawn into a small storage room feeling trapped

behind something scuttled passed

then in front heard a whimpering soft anguished cry

in a corner a young woman crouched

empathy filled her confused mind as she approached

as before her a beast encroached!

No more the poor wretched woman before her eyes

in the oppressive dim greenish light

but a hideous crouching snarling beast from hell

instinct made her turn and flee

tearing at the flesh on her legs blindly tried to run

certain her earthly life was done!

Weakening with every step saw an exit sign ahead

could only hope it would open

slamming against it at speed she burst through

reaching the ground floor level

falling through the fire door back in reception

standing dazed in reflection!

Without hesitation now quickly left this building

and down the way she had come

halting to inspect the painful wounds on her legs

but there was no marks to be seen

what had happened impossible to comprehend

petrified into the crowd did blend!

Those images haunted her did it really happen?

Never told anybody of her shortest day in a job!
