Text Message!

A text message was sent to his cell phone

warning him to go to an address

who had sent it nobody knew the number

this was for special business

as an undercover detective had to be wary

this assignment it was scary!

Taking precautions headed to the location

even though it could be a trap

had an informant who had not contacted

for a few months it was his style

the block of flats on a rough estate loomed

amongst shabby houses was marooned!

Parked amongst vandalised cars and trash

smelt that stench of cultivated weed

as he headed for the entrance to slum block

knew it was a gang base by the tags

another message made him miss a beat

started to sweat feeling the heat!

It read third floor num thirteen take stairs

security door was not locked

certain nobody was following sprinted

up those four flights of stairs

entered the small lobby spotting a man

this was where the nightmare began!

Saw the flash of a gun firing at his head

ducked it missed by a hairs width

charged head butting the thug his fist

completing his incapacitation

inside the flat other voices could be heard

the action soon became blurred!

Instinct took over as it seemed like an army

rushed out had to use his training

and wits to overcome overwhelming odds

glad he had his trusty police baton

it did the damage until he could grab a gun

entering hoped the fighting was done!

Saw it was his criminal informant sitting

bruised and battered in the kitchen

still with a cell phone clasped in his hand

before he could utter a word

they were heading for the ground floor

as more burst through a glass door!

Quickly reversed their exit to the balcony

found themselves looking down

four floors also s  burnt out van well placed

no time to think both jumped

to a hail of automatic fire as they collided

on metal somehow were safely guided!

Managed to get in his car his companion hit

just getting away but soon pursued

speeding through unfamiliar back streets

eventually able to contact back up

the assailants were beginning to draw near

down a familiar road was able to steer!

For the moment they had shaken pursuers

and drove onto headquarters

on his radio heard there was a gun battle

glad they had got clear of trouble

inside was able to know what had gone on

it was a sting that had gone wrong!

The informant had bypassed him this time

nearly paying with both their lives

but through the carnage a big drug haul

confiscated and gang caught

the adrenaline rush had still not subsided

but it had been an adventure decided!

Early!

Early on that morning was so calm and sunny

as they set off on their journey

though the sky was filled with chemical trails

that did not fade but stayed

it was a big controversy they were being laced

with toxins the rulers embraced!

Kept this in mind as the day began to heat up

soon came upon traffic

decided to take a detour along  quieter

empty country lanes

were lost without phones and navigation

began to cause frustration!

Upon an abandoned village their first stop

this they did not see or expect

until their car ran over the vandalised sign

reading contaminated zone

a red skull and crossed bones made it grim

though a bright day here was dim!

Decided it best to leave without stopping here

but as they reversed to head back

as there seemed to be no road going through

it appeared out of place on moorland

the engine cut out the friends were stuck here

their next move was unclear!

Their phones read no signal yet could see a tower

sat not wanting to exit the vehicle

sensed it would be unwise to step outside the car

trapped in disbelief so vulnerable

patience was something they all lacked for sure

should not have taken a detour!

Suddenly on the roof a bang as if somebody there

scraping metal ringing in their ears

a black substance trickled down the windscreen

a slug like thing slithered into view

then were also on front windows on either side

each feeling wimps and mortified!

The three friends decided they had to decamp

the windows started to melt

struggling into the rear seat luckily four doors

in unison forced one open and ran

stumbling down the road they had just driven

to get away alive they were striven!

Running began to tire then thinking it was safe

slowed to a walking pace

a boom made them stop a bright flash followed

turning could see it was the car

an odd noise next to them took each by surprise

the slug like things muffled their cries!

High above another chemical trail filled the sky

a fine vapour fell where even birds did not fly!

Impulse!

It was on impulse he stopped he thought

this thundery night as the rain fell

in a blinding lightning flash was certain

something was standing ahead

that moment of dread overwhelmed him

certain this was no imaginary whim!

Had only one pint with a meal an hour ago

was feeling fine until now

decided to drive on the car would not start

then all the electrics failed

now really scared he just watched the storm

another flash closer a shape did form!

It looked like a woman in a white nightgown

long straggly dark hair

soaked the head bowed standing in the road

thinking she was distressed

yet that gut instinct was telling him to stop

this was but a false backdrop!

Another loud thunder-clap and bright flash

now stood close to the bonnet

head was raised exposing a grotesque face

skeletal in its appearance

at this shocking image there was no escape

what really was the monstrous shape?

Frenzy overwhelmed him he was trapped

pulling at the door handle

until his hands bled he started to go mad

another flash nothing was there

until he sensed movement from behind

for his fate was resigned!

With an almighty clap of thunder he knew

it was with him in the car

nobody heard his muffled pitiful screams

as beside him the thing sat

his heart and mind could take it no more

as the rain outside did pour!

As daylight broke the storm had abated

a passing farmer found him

lights and engine running on the roadway

glancing in saw the expression

of terror slumped pale staring wide-eyed

he was all alone inside!
