Waiting!

Though it was not that late on the station

the couple waiting for a train

began to notice it was extremely quiet

when they heard a thump

coming from the direction of an escalator

what was happening were unsure!

Watching it slowly rumble downwards empty

what appeared to be blood

covered each step they shuffled backwards

just as a train sped through

but did not stop their thoughts confused

suspiciously the vicinity perused!

What nightmare had befallen them both here

noticing a poster on a wall

warning travellers to be aware of mutant rats

as they read heard scratching

noises that were becoming louder and nearby

they had to escape or at least try!

Then a squealing that was a crescendo of babble

there must have been thousands

surged towards them their only escape the lines

hoping another train did not come

realising why it had not stopped were they too late

weary and in a growing panic state!

These creatures were huge and determined to attack

they knew their flesh each desired

still light so were able to see an exit in a rusty fence

squeezing through ripping their skin

their dripping blood leaving a much stronger scent

the rats their compulsion to vent!

Quickly blocking the hole with an old fridge freezer

soon realised it was no barrier

with the sheer numbers they soon crashed through

so their next move was to climb

up a rusting fire escape of a warehouse just ahead

out of  breath looked down with dread!

From the vantage point could view the numbers

making out the bloody carnage left

calling for help on a smart phone could only sit

saw flame throwers being used

the distinct sound of  rapidly increasing gun fire

in shock both now began to tire!

Eventually a harassed voice answered their call

uncertain when rescue would come

it could be a long time or never was the reply

for now glad death had spared them

yet from above heard scratching and scurrying

was the reaper their end hurrying?

Escalator!

On that long steep downward escalator

amongst the commuters

a gaunt motionless girl did appear

at first not being noticed

until people walked right through

then panic did ensue!

Instantly it spread just wanting to escape

pushing in both directions

staff feared there could be casualties

what had caused the event

on a week day the main station disrupted

as such chaos erupted!

A manager looked up from the lower level

at the sheer stairway angle

seeing the hunched figure halfway up

that never seemed to move

no response to his voice so started to climb

as around him was oozing slime!

The escalator that had been eerily stationary

began to creek into action

but it had been switched off sometime earlier

and the black slime increased

now becoming very slippery under his feet

definitely not feeling upbeat!

Four others were trapped as the flow rose

oozing out of every crevice

running the only way onto the platform

she stood by the tunnel entrance.

now countless more joined in a silent leer

what was going on here?

Dread filled their hearts were they going to die

turning slowly to each other

in unison grasped tightly their hands to pray

looking back it was clear

everything seemed normal an empty station

what was the explanation?

The escalator as they approached was working

and being used as normal

it seemed the incident lasted only minutes

and was resolved quickly

could it have been a mass linked hallucination

a paranormal invasion?

Their lives changed forever as it’s often said

getting on with their work

what they’d seen etched into their memories

months later it came to light

while urgent was work carried out on the line

by the Do Not Enter Tunnel sign!

As they dug deep a mass grave was discovered

it was established from the plague

that no authority had realised was even there

had this been the ghosts they saw

nothing touched but care and respect shown

to the many unknown!

Sightings are a regular occurrence even now

but less frightening somehow

what triggered this event was never found

to the many this was profound!
