Rain had been forecast for the whole area
being a mountainous region
it was a guaranteed regular occurrence
their nearest neighbours
lived two miles down an old wagon trail
the ecology here frail!
As the light faded the animals under cover
on the small sheep farm
those distant rumbles of thunder heard
and streaks of lightning
it was late summer of nineteen sixty-one
the days work was done.
The family sat down for their evening meal
there were two children
a son Max of twelve and a daughter of six
who was named Jade
they were happy but becoming agitated
their fear more elevated!
For many years there had been lots of cases
of animal mutilations
even two of their own sheep and neighbours
stories of UFO’s often seen
and unknown creatures in the woods and hills
given everyone the chills!
What was going to happen next the question
that would soon be apparent
the children were never allowed to go far
though Jade was a lot younger
her brother Max loved his sister they got on
their bond truly strong!
On this night the storm skirted around them
their faithful pet and guard dog
sat quietly on the porch as they went to bed
early starts the routine
it seemed a quiet night very warm and dank
but eventually to sleep sank!
The dog was aroused from his rest around two
his long ears pricked up
an inaudible noise alerting his sensitive hearing
from the trees a gleaming light
slowly descended landing onto soft damp ground
without making any sound!
Then small beings came from within its interior
through a bluish haze
stood as if waiting two approached the main door
soon Jade came out
between the two went to the craft as if in a trance
instantly did advance!
At this point Max opened the window being alerted
to see the event happening
ran down the stairs in a panic and spiraling dread
outside watched it take off
the dog howled he loudly shouted felt helpless
in himself emotionally feckless!
Soon he was joined by their distraught parents
totally unable to comprehend
their first reaction was to frantically question
staring into the cloudy sky
he had the impression they both blamed him
heartbroken knew the future dim!
Now sixty-four sat on the porch of the same house
reflecting that dreadful night
his parents long dead did not recover from the loss
life was hard from then on
his sister was never seen again his guilt remained
still himself he blamed!
There had been searches police saturated the area
months passed rumours grew
the family was accused of killing their daughter
nobody really believed the truth
on his own how he prayed for Jades safe return
holding one of her toys he did so yearn!
Max to this very day has not given up hope!
