Apartment!

No matter how many times he told them

somebody was in his apartment

the police searched and found nothing

in the end he was treated crazy

until neighbours reported a fracas there

finding his body dead on a chair!

There was the sign of disruption everywhere

items thrown around the room

the body was unmarked but looked scared

as if he had died of fright

eyes wide open the mouth to as if yelling

why for now no telling!

It was an old tenement building in the area

used by countless people

since it was constructed a century before

frequented by gangsters

inevitably a brothel of unseen degradation

for the girls a living damnation!

But in recent times converted as a residency

for the elderly of the city

there had been complaints from other tenants

but thought the first mortality

with no clues to what had happened within here

but unnatural was clear!

The rooms were cleared and then redecorated

ready for the next tenant

it was not until the lady who had just retired

had settled in she noticed

odd sounds like somebody tapping somewhere

saw someone sat in her armchair!

Unnerved by this enquired with her neighbours

told her about the deceased man

being open-minded she tried not let it linger

that was until later that night

waking to find a hunched figure sat on the bed

this really filled her with dread!

The buildings owners only wanted rent money

without any interest in problems

the stories of ghosts just a disgruntled tenant

until this corpse was found

played down the situation after all he was old

their total attitude cold!

The retired tenant a few days later pack a bag

walked out leaving everything

never said anything but was seen to leave

looking confused and frail

all her clothes and personal effects deserted

by something pressure exerted!

The strange occurrences spread to the corridors

even visitors were knocked down

and some were dragged by an unknown force

this was caught on a camera

that had been put there as a human detector

not to catch a ghostly spectre!

Residents stayed in their own space it continues

nobody talked about it much

the apartment had to be cleared once more

now no tenant stayed long

the noises screams and bangs eventually ignored

but the phenomena soured!

After a very violent occurrence action was taken

a paranormal group was contacted

it was well reported some fled in pure terror

one disappeared the other

for months had resided on a psychiatric unit

what was here so evil and illicit?

This has yet to be assessed as none would tell!

Through The Arches!

Through the arches leading to open fields

the elderly man walked

slowly with his small ageing little dog

cheerful on his daily stroll

happy in his own company with his pet

normally nobody else he met!

Quite as usual on the his established route

did not see the group of lads

watching him pass with too much interest

started to follow close behind

his dog sensed them near as he growled

at this the elderly man scowled!

At the same point let his dog off the lead

near to a clump of bushes

the group of six gathered behind them

circling a younger boy

peering down at him in conversation

he listened to their oration!

Into his small hand they put a knife

he had to stab the man

as if mesmerized gripped the handle

said nothing but nodded

the elderly man sat down on a bank

from a water bottle drank.

If really he wanted to be part of the gang

kill him they kept saying

coming up stealthily behind the old man

shaking with anticipation

brought the knife down striking with force

in the neck then felt remorse!

Falling back looked up at the lad in anguish

eyes locked a barking dog

brought him back to the reality of his actions

quickly withdrawing the knife

wiped off the blood in the grass automatically

unable to let go ran erratically!

Ignoring the shouts and cheers of the gang

who ran in the opposite direction

leaving the innocent victim dying his pet

guarding him whimpering

laying next to the loyal friend now silent

he was small but defiant!

The lad who should have been at school

reached his parents house

they were both out at work he had a key

heart pounding breathless

washed blood off his small hands thinking

watching it drain without blinking!

Then as he sat in the kitchen alone cried

at twelve why had he killed

the knife was on the table in front of him

his torment now had begun

a loud knock at the door made him cower

this was his defining hour!

Red Eyes!

It was a quiet restaurant as they entered

for a pleasant meal

first chance since the birth of their son

like a celebration

a sense of achievement being parents

to them so immense.

A waiter guided them to a corner table

good being out

her mum happily agreeing to babysit

first grandchild

both noticed an elderly man staring

like red eyes glaring!

Trying to ignore his growing presence

but could not

an evening spoilt as his eyes watched

piercing our minds

staff seemed oblivious to him there

sitting in the chair!

Called over the waiter to settle their bill

enquired quietly

who was the elderly figure by the door

with burning glare

he only saw just an empty table and chair

nobody there  to stare!

Pressing to get even more information

he reluctantly said

long ago there was a funeral parlour here

answering no more

backed quickly away as they went to exit

there he did sit!

Out side the atmosphere was far better

yet he still stared

now laughing his face became distorted

then he evaporated

no more did he sit shrivelled and dark

leaving a memory stark!

What lay in  the history of this building

why only them

had witnessed such a freakish evil being

filled with revulsion

headed home to be with their newborn

their beliefs now torn!

Their lives forever filled with a growing terror!

Looking Down!

Looking down at my young clear skin

full of energy and hope

innocent not seeing any fear around

a life time ahead of me

then no internet nor mobile phones

robots and human clones!

Less complicated not the pressures

vinyl records and cassettes

shops closed Sundays families spoke

safe for children outside

being able to grow in natural stages

not endless exam pages!

Today I look down at my ageing skin

struggling to keep warm

nobody calls or ever bothers to visit

harder to pay rising bills

families split lacking close support

respect no longer taught!

The elderly are considered a burden

in this faltering society

where corruption affects everybody

greed no compassion

services shut for lack of funds its said

on egg shells we do tread`!

Life may have been hard but people cared

kindness and help freely shared!

Mary!

The elderly man was lonely since his wife had died

he would not accept help had his pride.

Not an easy life and a soldier in the last world war

but nobody seemed to care any more.

What he did for his king and country just history

his life was in the past to most a mystery!

Finding it difficult without Mary to face each day

his depression would not go away.

Two grown up children they never came to call

not since Mary had died after the fall.

Living in the same house for nearly fifty-two years

they were so happy now shed only tears.

He lost the will to live so Ben fell into endless sleep

no longer for that burden to keep.

Twelve months later neighbours reported a smell

lingering where from they could not tell.

There were a  few relatives that could be found

when he was buried in the ground!

But Ben was now by his wife’s side once again.

At least she loved him and cared!

The Pensioner!

The pensioner heard  loud noises in the night

petrified it was a burglar.

But unwisely looked around the bungalow

yet everything was in place.

Except for the open back door all was still

in his lungs cold air did fill.

Around his wrinkled neck was a button pendent

for summoning urgent support.

Pressing it hard a young voice loudly replied

he could hardly speak.

Telling him to stay calm help was quickly coming

listening to a faint humming!

Shaken by this he sat down on a kitchen chair

staring out into the garden.

He recalled that grave size patch of ground

where nothing would grow.

Often wondering what was below the earth

at this moment felt no mirth!

A door bell ring made him nearly fall off the chair

taking awhile to let them in.

A warden and constable who were concerned

thoroughly checked around.

And seemed satisfied everything was fine

further help he did decline.

Alone once more it was certainly not the same

until now it felt like home.

Now every single sound made him quiver

and focused on the door!

As it re-opened on its own he now saw

like a shadow on the door!

He also had a bad heart this he couldn’t take

collapsing on the grubby floor.

The following day a social worker called

being shocked finding him.

Natural causes the post-mortem revealed

the secret in the ground sealed!

No suspicions aroused at how many died

in this council property.

After all they were all getting very old

so just natural causes!

Whatever was buried an untold mystery

somebody’s dark history!

Soon another elderly resident moved in!
