Shutters!

From within the rickety building stared out

through the rotting wooden shutters

chained to rusting bed with dirty mattress

her cries ignored how did she get here

out with friends this was all she could recall

until the darkness did fall!

 

Heard something was in the room with her

scurrying around please not a rat

this thought more  scary at that moment

than why she had been abducted

the party dress still on so carefully chosen

of only petite build was frozen!

 

A tin bowl was close by guessed for peeing

a bottle of water also there

numbed with fear could only sit helplessly

wondering what could happen

as the dirty mattress dipped behind her

then felt what seemed like soft fur!

 

A large black cat laid down by her purring

unfazed at the dank surroundings

now certain there was a person crouching

in the dark corner of the room

screamed as loudly as she could so weak

stopping when a voice did speak!

 

Soft so very faint it was a young female

like herself she was not alone

but almost immediately nothing there

surely it was real lord please

but no whatever it was had now gone

for her family did so long!

 

A further shock immediately threw her

went to look down at the cat

not there anymore never saw it move

as the dark engulfed the room

helplessness gnawed at her whole being

as things that were not there seeing!

 

Sound of heavy footsteps and door opening

was confronted by a tall shape

another ghost demon or just imagination

but a tight grip on her arms

knew a real human beast stood before her

placed tray on bed but did not confer!

 

Masked she froze petrified did not touch

appeared to check locks then left

lack of even a spoken word was too much

gasping for breath from the corner

a young girl pale long black straggly hair

came towards her with a blank stare!

 

Though a touch like ice it was comforting

she could feel somebody close

that stopped her going completely insane

soon falling asleep exhausted

was awoken by shouting and commotion

startled became filled with emotion!

 

First words heard Thank God you’re safe

as an uniformed officer came over

quickly removed from this squalid scene

after medical checks went home

her concerned parents hugging her so tight

as she recalled that awful night!

 

kept telling them it was the young girls help

staying close that kept her alive

at the time did not tell what they both knew

a skeleton was found another victim

had been there a long time the police had said

several more around the property laid!

 

Nobody believed her the girl was never found

nor this mysterious cat ever seen around!

Would never have taken the security post

had he known it was here

filling his vision the abandoned prison

dwarfed his six feet six frame

a history of brutality suicides executions

determined to fulfill his obligations

be rational inside the grim condemned wing

hoped the job no nasty surprises bring!

 

First shift was with a senior security officer

took him around the eery buildings

favored by paranormal groups to investigate

where its said the prisoners roamed

though long dead had departed life violently

their souls unable to rest or pass on

prison guards also within here had perished

their memory deeply cherished!

 

As he toured told of the long paranormal past

the gates now no longer locked

left open eerily quiet their footsteps echoed

on the dusty concrete floor

the power was turned off had to use torches

in a harsh and sparse interior

though in ghosts not sure whether to believe

soon different ideas would conceive!

 

The moment had arrived his first lone patrol

part of his work to keep away

anybody interfering with any investigations

mostly in the buildings alone

had that intense awareness of somebody near

tried but unable to shake it off

heard what may have been a banging  cell door

and shouting voices but not sure!

 

This before the group had even arrived here

really dark and cold at any time

needed the money had to man up he thought

took a deep breath passing through

cells where he knew there had been a murder

could feel depression and fear

glad to be back in the security office satisfied

had confronted the dread deep inside!

 

As a child saw what he thought was a monster

inside his house while playing

just appeared from nowhere ran crying to mum

but nothing was found on searching

parents put it down to a young child’s imagination

not believing him was a life long frustration!

 

Through to his adulthood felt it had followed him

so here he was to face his demon

had told nobody not even his wife nor friends

as the months went by more confident

it was nothing and for all those years allowed

that memory to interfere with living

until that shift brought his reality to a conclusion

there was no longer confusion!

 

Fortunate that he had befriended a psychic medium

there for an event had gone with him

on his rounds and felt there was a violent entity

moving around as a blow hit him

she saw a blurry shape pass through him in a second

he staggered out followed by a loud grunt

she too was shaken and surprised at this experience

at this totally unexpected interference!

 

Now he was not alone at last somebody understood

after that trauma during his childhood

yet was it the same entity that had scared him so

this was the next step he now had to know!
