Mirror!

The room was bare except for a mirror

covered in a thick black sheet

it was a dare that he and his girlfriend

should explore the property

an abandoned country house by a lake

was their biggest mistake!

On a winter’s night frost settling they came

ignoring the private signs

reluctantly neared the foreboding manor

with a crowbar gained entry

with only their torches and a frantic prayer

of that room were soon aware!

Both were certain somebody had gone within

had to explore for themselves

scared but a reaction held onto each other

into the room that was unblemished

no signs of decay or vandalism both wondered

where had they stupidly blundered?

A natural reaction together pulled off the cover

the doors behind slammed shut

in the images from the mirror showed a room

furnished candles flickered a fire spat

a monstrous figure came into view stared back

as if was instantly going to attack!

Retreating to the doors praying they would open

just as the fiend was lashing out

it opened adrenaline giving them strength

as crashing into objects really hurt

losing their way in the torch-light they feared

beginning to wonder if safety neared!

Found themselves now in a glass conservatory

rotting vegetation covered the ground

could see this thing getting ever closer  behind

without faltering crashed through glass

hitting gravel and rolling down a steep bank

into the lake of stagnant water that stank!

Managed to get out feeling weak and very sick

had to stop even if it was a finality

but nothing was following it seemed so quiet

the house looked more haunting

as the early dawn light surrounded their vision

reviewing in some pain their decision!

Their teeth chattering limbs becoming so numb

knew they had to move or freeze

unsure how safe it was even though daylight

slow progress could here sounds

hoping it was just the wildlife that was nearby

then heard that blood stopping cry!

Was the monster still hunting them?

Disturbing!

This was a disturbing news alert

a car surrounded the man shot

with not a chance to surrender

to prove his innocence or guilt

killed upon an observation made

this happened on a busy highway

at least eight shots by police fired

his existence that day expired!

A witness reported a man had a gun

how easy is it to mistake an object

driving by at speed on a busy road

but was proof beforehand attained

to confirm if it had actually occurred

positive in a split second sighting

was this truly the right choice taken

if wrong decision a life forsaken!

Is it not a worry how at peril we are

in a society of such savagery and fear

how easy for mistakes to be made

decisions initiated without a reverse

enquiries are vague an internal affair

what we are told often makes no sense

the risk to life has become immense!

Should we really start to have major misgivings?

Warning!

There was a warning but only a second

the space station shattered

a huge object passed by no survivors

on earth nothing was picked up

oblivious the cloaked mass had arrived

to earth’s radar disguised!

Emerged at warp speed into our space

from another dimension

linked with earth’s molecular structure

returned to its creation

after long observation decision eliminate

for the human race no debate!

Desecration of the small planets resources

endless conflicts and suffering

disregard for any other life on its surface

with increase to the threat

of annihilation and spread of its brutality

to universes had brought finality!

With a few dominating the vast multitude

in disarray at the elite control

as godliness was overtaken by the soulless

the experiment was ended

the mass engulfed this once alluring creation

completing the extermination!

Leaving an empty void where once life had existed!

Decision!

Out of breath he staggered to the edge

not realising the sheer drop

in turmoil uncertain of what to do next

he sensed the men were close

it was meant to be a short break away

sounds here he could not stay!

Nowhere to run made an instant decision

there was a river far below

so jumped that was how desperate he felt

better to die than be captured

time seemed to stop closed his eyes tight

hit water adding to the plight!

A fast flowing river pulled him underneath

choking trying to breathe

keeping his head above water stayed afloat

until the current eased

to the rocky bank weak managed to crawl

in a muddy pool did sprawl!

The rest was short he could hear the dogs

an awful emotion terror

he had only asked them being lost the way

from a friendly request

they suddenly tried to drag him from his car

drove away did not get far!

Their shotgun pellets smashed into the glass

then bursts the rear tyres

now out of control swerved into a nearby tree

instinct gave him flight

the adrenaline gave him the strength to run

but began to feel he was done!

Somehow managed to stand and slowly walk

realised the pain in his arm

this was what kept him going he was the prey

for some crazy hunters today

almost crawling up and over the crest of a hill

with all his being did he will!

Could see a road some distance down below

a steep slope the barrier

men and hounds were closing in a shot fired

if it was his end it had to be

forcing himself over he started to roll faster

of his destiny no longer master!

Agony had permeated his body to weak to cry

he lay broken in a ditch

through blurred vision saw a lorry approaching

no longer caring if he existed

losing consciousness never saw the vehicle stop

nor hunters observing from the top!

Several days later awoke in an intensive care ward

relived he was at last safe

until he saw one of the hunters sitting by the bed

dressed in a sheriffs uniform

his uninjured arm in a handcuff clipped to a side rail

had he reached the end of the trail!

Petrified at the situation what was happening to him?

A Stranger Now!

Anne had not seen her brother for six months

he had been keeping in touch

being a scientist had gone on a research trip

to some distant rain forest

making contact once a week by satellite phone

now his whereabouts were unknown!

On the day he was due back heard a news alert

that heavy rain in south america

had caused severe flooding in the jungle region

unable to pronounce the area

recognised it as where her brother was based

added all life had been erased!

Finding this hard to accept rang the embassy

went home to be with the family

together in mourning waited for confirmation

but after months of agony

the parents calmly waited for news of their son

what else could be done?

Half asleep on a Saturday morning the phone

rang vibrating the bedside table

she had forgotten it was in the cabinet draw

or it had any power in the battery

last time she had used it was to speak to Jack

her brother was he back?

Picked it up and hastily spoke is that you Jack

a long pause then a quite voice

yes sis I am on my way home ring you again Species

when I arrive at the airport

are you alright she enquired he said no more

something was wrong for sure!

Sounded like a stranger this could not ignore

glad he was alive but worried

told her parents he had at last been in touch

yet did not make her happy

waiting for him to call once more so unsure

there was bad news in store!

At last he called spoke in the same timid way

it did not sound like him

could she pick him up now then he had gone

before she could speak

A very cold dark night then it started to rain

began to feel the strain!

Parking was not easy too many cars no spaces

at last headed for the arrivals

the area was very busy everybody pushing

impatient for their baggage

she waited to see Jack waving and calling out

but he did not seem to be about!

It was then she heard a scream and the anger

turned to panic as crowds

started running blindly in every direction

she managed to quickly hide

behind a pillar or would have been trampled

never before this fear sampled!

Security could do nothing it emptied quickly

unable understand why

looked around spotting a lone hooded figure

she knew it was her brother

approaching backed away she followed him

not really but on a whim!

She could hear the noise behind and dogs barking

what had frightened so many

please stop you know it is me what is wrong

her voice made him stop and turn

she came up close he cowered and was crying

it felt she were prying!

Pulling back his hood Anne had to turn away

could not stop an exclamation

there was a shrivelled old man staring at her

by his eyes she knew it was Jack

more monstrous than human she was shaken

hoping she had been mistaken!

Jack came close his gnarled hands afraid to touch

his sister soft perfect skin

sitting up she wanted to know what had happened

to her handsome brother

but that chance never came a police dog attacked

he lashed out it backtracked!

He was gone he did not move like an old man

was this another species

shuddering with the knowledge it was Jack

yet what had he become

the police chased him she just sat petrified

he should have died!

Back at the car wondered where he could be

what to tell mum and dad

that would be hard they had waited patiently

how could she tell the truth

that moment of decision would delay for now

hoping it was not real somehow!

It was her brother yet a stranger now!

Chemistry!

Over their childhood years the two teenagers

lived close to each other

there was a chemistry but neither spoke

or communicated feelings

wrapped up in their harsh every day living

a love yet for them to be giving.

Each drawn into a nations annual contest

where two from each tribe

chosen to fight until only one would stand

with twenty-two others united

once chaste teenagers are now prepared

trained to kill no mercy spared!

Televised live for all to share in the gore

and excitement of the hunt

manipulated by the governing council

the young die in their plan

profit in the end rules the young lives

as the greedy contrives!

No regrets for those lost during the spectacle

paramount morals long gone

forging the most savage means of death

is encouraged for excitement

and to thrill the prying mass audience

making the hunt more intense!

Once placed onto the field of their combat

the two came to face each other

no longer secret admirers but enemies

who would must kill or be killed

during the brutal pursuit became a team

not part of the organisers scheme!

They saved each other from instant death

the watching public increased

the host decided to change the rules himself

as the love story unfolded

increasing the obstacles to raise risk factor

raising audiences to shout for more!

Nearly at their destination beasts are released

eager to rip them apart

both just making it to a safe  high vantage point

one more contestant attacks

the engineered fairytale ending nearly derailed

but between them the assailant failed!

Slipping off safe ground into the creatures jaws

they quickly made their escape

off the field of battle to a spot then picked up

by helicopter back to the city

where both were greeted as heroes of the hour

feeling the influence and power!

The euphoria would be short only one must live

the host who made the decision

was found dead and the hunt for these teenagers

would soon make them run

either of the victors it was decreed must perish

the organisers sentiment did not cherish!

The Foureyed Poet.

Waved!

From the passenger deck the family waved

excitedly to their relatives

tears flowing on the dockside far below

their journey about to begin

a hard decision leaving so many behind

already for them pined.

Before long pulled away the course was set

the old country disappeared

soon over the horizon and picking up speed

as the temperature dropped

heading towards the freezing north Atlantic

aboard the luxury liner Titanic!

The parents full of optimism for their futures

an adventure set in motion

like hundreds aboard this magnificent ship

beginning its maiden voyage

but as life often is an unpredictable gamble

not always a pleasant amble.

While trying to settle their excited children

for at least a few hours sleep

high above upon an observation platform

lookouts through binoculars

saw large icebergs as they passed at speed

not slowing onward did proceed!

Unaware of  any risks passengers were relaxed

happy and confident it was safe

being told the ship was an unsinkable vessel

and their destination guaranteed!

suddenly there was a slight judder from below

a vibration that began to grow.

The clock on the wall in the upper deck cabin

clearly read twenty-three forty

their instincts told them something was wrong

a frantic knock on the door

and a stewards cry get to your lifeboat station

giving no further explanation!

A child each grasped tightly in their aching arms

found themselves in the crush

of panic-stricken passengers equally confused

scrabbling to reach the lifeboats

only to discover not enough had been provided

and families were divided!

Women and children the priority caused mayhem

fathers were left on the decks

elderly couples not wanting to be separated stayed

some single men tried to get in

being launched half full others tipped up in the sea

many jumped into to be free!

As it sank no rescue ships were within the vicinity

the happy couple were parted

the two children cried as they were being lowered

down onto the cruel icy sea

now it was their own father staring with a disbelief

waving trying to hide his grief!

Mother and children eventually were rescued

and reached their destination

but returned home their dream now shattered

never to see their father again

nor a young wife to see here beloved husband

without him now they would stand!

The Foureyed Poet.

Dilemma!

What an awesome future said her husband

so excited their first child

buying their own home careers on track

with care finances good

parents to taking the news in their stride

filled with happiness and pride.

As the months went by the baby was fine

scans were perfect to view

mum started having pains in the chest

just indigestion it must be

nothing else that it could be so a delay

before the day she had to say!

Test were carried out a diagnosis found

the results were back

and the conclusions not good for her

a series heart condition

needing to have major surgery or die

but she could not comply.

The baby would be put at a serious risk

and not likely to live

determined her child would be safe

refused the operation

until cradled in her arms protected

the decision she elected!

Her husband was torn between them both

understanding the decision

months passed until the thirtieth week

her condition deteriorated

urgent caesarean section had to be done

and they had a healthy son!

But the strain was too much for his mum

having a spinal anaesthetic

had her wish holding him in her arms

and a precious photo saved

realising she may never see him grow

that day did not let it show!

But she is still alive and continuous fighting

every day a precious gift!

The Foureyed Poet

The Lodger!

The single young woman found it was hard

even though working

to pay the bills and the large mortgage to

she needed a lodger

providing extra income so she could cope

this really was the hope!

The lodger arrived late on an winter evening

there on the front porch

an old suitcase clasped in bony hand

speaking in a quiet voice

harsh whisper in a monotonous drone

yet had a chilling tone!

Said she had read about the room to rent

yet not contacted by phone

the owner reluctant to let her come inside

struggled paying the bills

regrettably no other enquiries  received

she could only proceed.

From the first meeting doubt was embedded

within her inner fears

already the warmth of her home had waned

showed her the room

gave her approval she would take it uttered

in agreement muttered!

Moved in that night with no other luggage

went in the room in silence

the door shut yet the owner full of dread

what had she let in her house

sat in the lounge listening to the television

already regretting her decision!

Decided to sleep down  in the lounge that night

later thought it was silly

to allow her imagination to spook her thoughts

the lodger would be fine

three days passed before eventually emerging

trouble began surging!

Unable to comprehend what she was doing

no food had been taken in

could not recall if the toilet had been used

not feeling well stayed inside

never been sick as this trying to think back

or so much energy lack!

The lodger crept about now mainly in the dark

the place would not heat

it was constantly cold and so many flies buzzed

always a dank mouldy smell

filled the air never had this before she came

nothing could she blame!

In the end decided had to make conversation

depression was overwhelming

even hard to climb the stairs breath short

soon outside the room stood

before she could knock the door it opened

into emptiness did descend!

Compelled to enter there saw the gaunt figure

empty eyes and  almost skeletal

went to speak but there was a piercing scream

followed by a blinding light

she woke with a shudder and fell off her bed

thinking she must be dead!

Finding her heart was racing knew she was not

sat shaken on the thick  rug

cold no more really went to the lodgers door

finding it was slightly open

summed up the courage to go right inside

had to face not hide!

But it was empty the lodger seemed to have left

the tension and fear had lifted

the odours and flies were not about any more

though she had not existed

strange had it been an awful nightmare she had

certainly never had one that bad!

Came home from work around seven that evening

got herself something to eat

then there was a faint tap upon the front door

wondering who it could be

nobody usually called at this time without a call

went to answer it down the hall!

Devastated to see a thin pale girl holding a suitcase

within  her bony hand!

The Foureyed Poet.

From The Cockpit

The air force pilot had to make the decision

that could cost many lives!

From the cockpit he had the perfect view

of a village to destroy!

Orders had been given to fire the missile

the distance just over a mile.

Being a veteran of many theatres of war

maybe he’d seen enough.

To much slaughter with negative results

a new concept in his thinking.

The panel indicated the target locked on

in his head remembering a song.

Give Peace a chance he began to hum

his finger pressed the trigger.

Watching the rocket as it hit the mark

knowing civilians were there!

Flying high aloof of the scene below

watching the explosion grow!

From the cockpit the pilot flew away

his mission was complete.

But this time his attitude was sour

it was time to retire.

Never doubting orders in this way

conscience came into play.

He could not switch off like a robot

sitting in a plane.

Unleashing such destructive power

this now overwhelmed him.

Realising the aftermath of his actions

there was no retractions!

All he wanted now was be with his family!
