The Well!

The happy family moved into the large house

on the edge of a lake

all were unaware until their teenage children

found a hidden overgrown well

first from a distance noticed the outline

at that time not able to define!

Behind tall weeds concealed was discovered

the relic emitting a sentient power

both felt it had to walk from the dire location

were afraid to tell their parents

of this startling undiscovered garden addition

that seemed in perfect condition!

For a while was forgotten as the house was fixed

to decorate and make theirs

being uninhabited for years before they found it

on a holiday the place a dream

with its supreme views and large lake location

space and liberation a great combination!

Nothing happened for some time life was good

they kept their distance

until the daughter saw lights darting about

flickering in a pattern

resisting the urge to go near just observed

yet her confidence unnerved!

Over the next few days the lights increased

as nobody else noticed them

began to feel it was only meant for her gaze

and a compulsion to explore

in her dressing gown on a bitterly cold night

went to peek like a ghost in white!

She was sleep walking in her mind could see

a girl waving so excitedly

a nice day she just wanted to meet and play

greeting as though friends

in reality nobody visible there she was alone

unprotected in a disaster zone!

The young girl’s face changed to sallow skin

dead eyes stared a victoria’s cry

the teenager awoke her soul fell into the well

her being sank into the dank water

gone now suppressed by the slimy green walls

nobody heard her Spiritual calls!

A different young woman went back inside

but to the family within

it was their beloved sister and daughter

the evil entity was reborn

new energy rejuvenating the decayed shell

the lid sealed the well!

Clear E. V. P!

Phil could not believe what he had just heard

as he sat in the cellar

doing a lone vigil it was fine until he replayed

and a deep voice hissed

saying ‘Get Out Or Die! it was a clear warning

edgy the team was informing!

Turning on his torch glanced at the surroundings

now with a sense of a presence

other members of the team joined him there

excited at this threatening EVP

their first response since entering the premises

it felt they had met their nemesis!

As a collective the fear factor greatly diminished

after all this was evidence

this their purpose for investigating the building

together sitting in anticipation

there was a natural chill in the dank atmosphere

their determination clear!

Feeling it was the time to have a calling out session

try to capture more voices

asking questions like is anybody here with us now

are you trapped in this cellar

two digital recorders now used in case one did fail

then heard a pitiful wail!

With heightened awareness asked more questions

after half an hour played back

a bang nearby made them twitch nerves tingled

at first there was  nothing a tall

but recorder one a long growl and clear voice tone

‘we are here you’re not alone!’

Followed by faint screams a hiss and then silence

but on the second recorder

a mocking voice called out the name of Gillian

somebody gasped loudly

it was their name the voice continued ‘I see you’

had a spirit come through?

In a dark cellar only camcorder screens gave light

a yelp of sudden pain

broke the quietness as the girl said her back hurt

a torch was switched on

three long bleeding scratches seen as back exposed

already staining her clothes!

There was a growing excitement and consternation

it would be best to leave now

not before one more eerie recording was heard

‘beast’ echoed in a clear sound

just then a stone was thrown bouncing off a wall

and by them closely did fall!

This was the point they each decided to exit here

never feeling on their own

it was five am though pleased with their results

actually were terror-stricken

clearing up the equipment just wanted to leave

as a danger did perceive!

Though intensive night would be back for more!

Summer Of Sixty One!

Rain had been forecast for the whole area

being a mountainous region

it was a guaranteed regular occurrence

their nearest neighbours

lived two miles down an old wagon trail

the ecology here frail!

As the light faded the animals under cover

on the small sheep farm

those distant rumbles of thunder heard

and streaks of lightning

it was late summer of nineteen sixty-one

the days work was done.

The family sat down for their evening meal

there were two children

a son Max of twelve and a daughter of six

who was named Jade

they were happy but becoming agitated

their fear more elevated!

For many years there had been lots of cases

of animal mutilations

even two of their own sheep and neighbours

stories of UFO’s often seen

and unknown creatures in the woods and hills

given everyone the chills!

What was going to happen next the question

that would soon be apparent

the children were never allowed to go far

though Jade was a lot younger

her brother Max loved his sister they got on

their bond truly strong!

On this night the storm skirted around them

their faithful pet and guard dog

sat quietly on the porch as they went to bed

early starts the routine

it seemed a quiet night very warm and dank

but eventually to sleep sank!

The dog was aroused from his rest around two

his long ears pricked up

an inaudible noise alerting his sensitive hearing

from the trees a gleaming light

slowly descended landing onto soft damp ground

without making any sound!

Then small beings came from within its interior

through a bluish haze

stood as if waiting two approached the main door

soon Jade came out

between the two went to the craft as if in a trance

instantly did advance!

At this point Max opened the window being alerted

to see the event happening

ran down the stairs in a panic and spiraling dread

outside watched it take off

the dog howled he loudly shouted felt helpless

in himself emotionally feckless!

Soon he was joined by their distraught parents

totally unable to comprehend

their first reaction was to frantically question

staring into the cloudy sky

he had the impression they both blamed him

heartbroken knew the future dim!

Now sixty-four sat on the porch of the same house

reflecting that dreadful night

his parents long dead did not recover from the loss

life was hard from then on

his sister was never seen again his guilt remained

still himself he blamed!

There had been searches police saturated the area

months passed rumours grew

the family was accused of killing their daughter

nobody really believed the truth

on his own how he prayed for Jades safe return

holding one of her toys he did so yearn!

Max to this very day has not given up hope!

The Lodger!

The single young woman found it was hard

even though working

to pay the bills and the large mortgage to

she needed a lodger

providing extra income so she could cope

this really was the hope!

The lodger arrived late on an winter evening

there on the front porch

an old suitcase clasped in bony hand

speaking in a quiet voice

harsh whisper in a monotonous drone

yet had a chilling tone!

Said she had read about the room to rent

yet not contacted by phone

the owner reluctant to let her come inside

struggled paying the bills

regrettably no other enquiries  received

she could only proceed.

From the first meeting doubt was embedded

within her inner fears

already the warmth of her home had waned

showed her the room

gave her approval she would take it uttered

in agreement muttered!

Moved in that night with no other luggage

went in the room in silence

the door shut yet the owner full of dread

what had she let in her house

sat in the lounge listening to the television

already regretting her decision!

Decided to sleep down  in the lounge that night

later thought it was silly

to allow her imagination to spook her thoughts

the lodger would be fine

three days passed before eventually emerging

trouble began surging!

Unable to comprehend what she was doing

no food had been taken in

could not recall if the toilet had been used

not feeling well stayed inside

never been sick as this trying to think back

or so much energy lack!

The lodger crept about now mainly in the dark

the place would not heat

it was constantly cold and so many flies buzzed

always a dank mouldy smell

filled the air never had this before she came

nothing could she blame!

In the end decided had to make conversation

depression was overwhelming

even hard to climb the stairs breath short

soon outside the room stood

before she could knock the door it opened

into emptiness did descend!

Compelled to enter there saw the gaunt figure

empty eyes and  almost skeletal

went to speak but there was a piercing scream

followed by a blinding light

she woke with a shudder and fell off her bed

thinking she must be dead!

Finding her heart was racing knew she was not

sat shaken on the thick  rug

cold no more really went to the lodgers door

finding it was slightly open

summed up the courage to go right inside

had to face not hide!

But it was empty the lodger seemed to have left

the tension and fear had lifted

the odours and flies were not about any more

though she had not existed

strange had it been an awful nightmare she had

certainly never had one that bad!

Came home from work around seven that evening

got herself something to eat

then there was a faint tap upon the front door

wondering who it could be

nobody usually called at this time without a call

went to answer it down the hall!

Devastated to see a thin pale girl holding a suitcase

within  her bony hand!

The Basement!

She found it hard even finding the office block

expecting to find a modern building

several times walking by the shabby front

it had to be her first day of work

across the thresh hold did step she was late

now in a very flustered state.

Up to the reception desk to ask for the directions

an elderly uniformed man sat

who did not even raise his head when she spoke

telling her it was on level three

rushing to the lift pressed the button and waited

to just go home she debated!

When the lift arrived got in pressing the button

to take her up to the third floor

seconds passed then descended to the basement

not what she had expected

jolted to a halt the doors opened slowly revealing

a dank corridor with low ceiling

Heard a soft voice calling her name stepping out

taken by surprise by the sound

the lift shut and now stood all alone in a nightmare

that pleading voice guided her

amongst discarded equipment and hissing pipes

making her have increasing gripes!

Every shadow seemed a lunging demonic beast

now focused on a greenish hue

collided with a disused filing cabinet then a chair

saw a woman standing there

that faded into thin air only a short distance ahead

her sanity hung by a thread!

Now drawn into a small storage room feeling trapped

behind something scuttled passed

then in front heard a whimpering soft anguished cry

in a corner a young woman crouched

empathy filled her confused mind as she approached

as before her a beast encroached!

No more the poor wretched woman before her eyes

in the oppressive dim greenish light

but a hideous crouching snarling beast from hell

instinct made her turn and flee

tearing at the flesh on her legs blindly tried to run

certain her earthly life was done!

Weakening with every step saw an exit sign ahead

could only hope it would open

slamming against it at speed she burst through

reaching the ground floor level

falling through the fire door back in reception

standing dazed in reflection!

Without hesitation now quickly left this building

and down the way she had come

halting to inspect the painful wounds on her legs

but there was no marks to be seen

what had happened impossible to comprehend

petrified into the crowd did blend!

Those images haunted her did it really happen?

Never told anybody of her shortest day in a job!
