Mistaken!

That feeling of unease persisted all day

life was good there were no problems

as he left the office heading to the bar

meeting friends for a Friday night drink

the streets busy as usual he felt safe

not noticing a car parked close behind

stepping up the pace began to unwind!

Never heard footsteps and a voice shout

just the sharp pain suddenly in his back

he fell face down onto the hard sidewalk

did not see nor hear the panic all around

being rushed to the emergency room

clinically in a critical condition on arrival

the assessment no chance of his survival!

Became another victim of mistaken identity

caught in the middle of a drugs dispute

as the streets became the battleground

a bullet removed from within his aorta

loss of blood and sever trauma he died

at this point he became aware of voices

then he could see gowned figures below

as he was rising above them so slow!

The patient on the operating table was him

alarms sounded as they said he was dead

found himself passing through solid floors

could see one laced trainer on a balcony

became warm and a blinding light ahead

so peaceful how contented no worries

coming ever closer wanted to be accepted

never had such a warmth or so protected!

But darkness came once more he was back

felt the tube in his throat could not move

so tired the sense of euphoria had faded

was soon brought out of the induced coma

informed his heart had stopped for a time

able to explain his time at heavens gate

of what he heard and saw certain it was real

now how different in himself he did feel!

Had he experienced deaths welcoming clatter

they did find the trainer where he indicated

now always happy to tell his story and chatter

about that day from life nearly separated!

Remorse!

It was dark she told herself over and over

along that country lane.

And late for a meeting with a new client

poor light was a factor.

Didn’t see the walker on the road side

surely they hadn’t died!

Thought it was an animal had felt the thud

her mind was on her work.

Only just got there in time but it went well

new business for the company.

Her morning journey seemed so long ago

for the day had a lot to show.

Pleased at her success went out to celebrate

with members from her firm.

In a wine bar a television showed the news

a reporter standing in a lane.

Policemen visibly stood behind his position

said a man was in critical condition!

Sitting staring at the screen knew it was her

said a driver was being sought.

Racked with guilt made her excuses and left

and then contacted the police.

In the interview room she sat waiting alone

had she killed him still unknown!

The minutes dragged by until the officers entered

and informed her he was alive.

Explaining what had happened so emotional

not leaving the scene on purpose.

Genuine tears of remorse filled her green eyes

they knew she told no lies!

No charges were brought but was given a caution

and later went to see the victim.

From the moment they made the first contact

a bond was formed between them.

And a relationship started the anguish was gone

now their love has become strong.

Now she must stop reflecting on that date

life has strange ways of twisting our fate!
