Shabby and Grey!

The hospital dated back to the Victorian era

now it looked shabby and grey

threatened many times with closing down

reduced to a minor injury unit

doors always locked soon after night fell

some thought a portal of hell!

Also notorious for the delivery of corpses

who had untimely deaths

in the eighteenth century there was a need

by surgeons bodies sought

prepared to pay cash without any question

by the so-called medical profession!

Certainly had an unwelcoming appearance

dark eerie long passages

to walk along lit spots never to go near

staff had rooms to avoid

where unexplained phenomena took place

and nobody wanted to retrace!

Patients were reluctant to go there or stay

being dark and oppressive

scared behind the curtains a monster hid

freezing made your skin crawl

a woman trapped one night found it true

all about this she knew!

Arrived just before dark shown to a cubicle

waited but nobody came

situated down a narrow corridor worried

when into darkness plunged

the curtain shook could feel it swish near

a touch and whisper did hear!

Got up quickly disadvantaged not able to see

who was there called out

no reply her eyes grew accustomed to the dark

pulling curtain right back

could see nobody touching the peeling wall

moved trying not to fall!

Just able to make out the shape of an exit door

tried hard not to panic

from behind a bang her heart missed a beat

as the amplified sound

vibrated through the air felt cold on her hand

as an object beside did land!

Losing her balance falling over a row of chairs

but staying on her feet

certain somebody was standing very close by

reaching for the handle

just as a streak of light passed by her head

from pale white to red!

Pushing the door ran through to afraid to look

now stood in the reception area

with nobody to be seen began hyperventilating

headed for the main exit

as another object thrown bounced on the floor

saw a mass towards her crawl!

The following day in natural light staff arrived

finding the woman sitting

against a glass panel mumbling her eyes wide

as if seeing some hideous sight

had to be restrained taken into psychiatric care

of her plight only too aware!

Encounter!

On his way to meet friends at a hotel

set in a valley amongst trees

the journey took him on lonely roads

untouched and unspoilt

elements of magic and ancient legends

around the dips and bends!

Now dusk wished he was not on his own

eyes tiring in the gloom

hindered by a thickening mist in the valley

the radio crackled annoyingly

ahead saw somebody walking in the road

at a good pace they strode!

Approaching seemed to walk into his path

yet no sound of impact felt

even driving slow could not avoid a collision

coming to an emergency stop

concerned had to reverse back to be sure

frantically had to explore!

Hesitantly got out into the swirling moist mist

glad he brought the torch

searched in a frenzied manner a long stretch

of  road and grass verge

nothing was there no body of man or beast

then all rationality ceased!

Petrified to be there what had he really seen

heard a noise what was around

quickly got in the car accelerating forward

not caring visibility was poor

until his speed made him swerve just missing

the car a tree nearly kissing!

Inches from its base halted spooked drove on

the faint lights of the hotel

came into a weary man’s gaze a relieved sigh

the entrance was approaching

parking headed to meet the others inside

fearful with them had to confide!

Certain the encounter was real not a memory

maybe a prowling spectre

though an unknown element was with him

had a perception it had come

his skin began to crawl feeling sick and cold

for them all the horror would unfold!

The mist thickened around the hotel as they came!

Polluted!

The sun shines its golden light and heat

down on a polluted sad landscape.

Why humans seem unable to see

this world is dying all around their feet.

Trees  by natures winds bending their shape

blowing around the earth uninhibited free.

Nature reserves and precious countryside

disappears as more and more buildings appear.

Roads manifest scaring more areas that remain

the urban crawl moves on less places to hide

As boundary lines are becoming unclear.

noise and traffic fumes gain pace how insane.

Towns within towns villages absorbed as well

no mercy for natural green open spaces.

Countryside and animals blend into the sprawl

scavenging from the humans disposable hell

Covertly hardly ever leaving any trace

adapting and caught up in our almighty fall.

I can remember fifty years ago. More green fields less road traffic and fewer people. No home computers or mobile phones.  Villages where villages and town were towns and nice roads in between.
