Before The Nation!

Before the nation many have volunteered

to join military forces

fighting for Queen and country in wars

proud to serve until death

facing many different enemies they went

with honour and good intent!

Politicians controlled them like chess pawns

dispensable in action

no thought for precious loyal fighting men

serving in appalling conditions

families waiting in constant concern at home

as into the abyss they roam!

There with comrades violence all around

often with devastating odds

campaigns of battle rage on into infinity

ravaging the once innocent

becoming oblivious in time to the carnage

as the spirit fills with rage!

Exhausted their courage can never be denied

against all odds heads held high with pride!

His Secret!

He had been thrown out at fifteen his secret

by parents who were always high

never knew love of a family always a loner

had a sister he tried to protect

his haunted vision of her always crying

yet like him always defying!

Within knew she would survive their cruelty

what else could she now do

nobody ever came to help them get free

his will to live was ebbing

worrying about his sister afraid to go back

the education he did lack!

Ended up begging on the street humiliated

on a day when he felt like dying

a dog wandered aimlessly lost passed him

turned and came slowly back

laying whimpering with sad eyes at his side

for the first time in years cried!

This scruffy bag of bones and fur needed help

neglected and desperate

identifying his situation with this new friend

now with a purpose in life

that emptiness was not so intense anymore

had to pick himself off the floor!

Giving him courage and confidence to mature

named the dog Thor

because he had given him strength and courage

to become a man from the boy

proud to have a loyal companion as he paced

knowing the parents had to be faced!”

Settled in a flat of his own and now employed

the inevitable had to be done

ringing the bell still scared him wanting to run

a young woman opened the door

his sister recognised him hugging so tight

filled with such delight!

This was when he learned the parents had died

she had tried to find her brother

knew they would meet again and be together

welcoming him and Thor

into a now happy home the passed left behind

their future clearly defined!

Settlers!

On the plains of the vast unexplored country

families had come as settlers.

Searching a new start from their homeland

realising hardships ahead.

Into the wilderness of a hostile environment

was their mutual intent!

Their only belongings stored in their wagon

just one of a long train.

No comforts only heartache along the trail

dying an every day event!

Raids by indigenous indian’s a constant threat

but they’d never admit regret.

An unmapped territory never before explored

with only their courage.

Many with faith in their god to keep them safe

from far-flung nations.

Seeking a better life in an unforgiving culture

as overhead flew the vulture!

Days of searing heat as man and animals dropped

countless miles of dust.

Then the torrents of pitiless rain and flash floods

left them with nothing!

Yet the survival instinct drove them to their goal

despite the eventual toll!

Creating a nation to this day that is loved and hated

by different parts of our world.

Influenced by the suffering of those early settlers

determined foolish and brave.

Carving their names in the history books of mankind

today how are their endeavours defined?

As our society reaches terminal velocity!

The Foureyed Poet.

kindness A Simple Word!

Is kindness such a very hard act to perform

it only takes a smile or a little respect

open a door maybe carry some shopping

not too much to ask of others surely not

helping somebody hurt or in trouble

they are not asking you for any money

selflessly wanting to give not take away

a simple word that is forgotten today!

Showing mercy a moment of human tenderness

not this nasty attitude of could not careless

to show somebody compassion may take courage

to overcome the trend for increasing rage!

Kindness is but a simple word but

will those cries for help be heard?
