Remorse!

It was dark she told herself over and over

along that country lane.

And late for a meeting with a new client

poor light was a factor.

Didn’t see the walker on the road side

surely they hadn’t died!

Thought it was an animal had felt the thud

her mind was on her work.

Only just got there in time but it went well

new business for the company.

Her morning journey seemed so long ago

for the day had a lot to show.

Pleased at her success went out to celebrate

with members from her firm.

In a wine bar a television showed the news

a reporter standing in a lane.

Policemen visibly stood behind his position

said a man was in critical condition!

Sitting staring at the screen knew it was her

said a driver was being sought.

Racked with guilt made her excuses and left

and then contacted the police.

In the interview room she sat waiting alone

had she killed him still unknown!

The minutes dragged by until the officers entered

and informed her he was alive.

Explaining what had happened so emotional

not leaving the scene on purpose.

Genuine tears of remorse filled her green eyes

they knew she told no lies!

No charges were brought but was given a caution

and later went to see the victim.

From the moment they made the first contact

a bond was formed between them.

And a relationship started the anguish was gone

now their love has become strong.

Now she must stop reflecting on that date

life has strange ways of twisting our fate!
