Shutters!

From within the rickety building stared out

through the rotting wooden shutters

chained to rusting bed with dirty mattress

her cries ignored how did she get here

out with friends this was all she could recall

until the darkness did fall!

Heard something was in the room with her

scurrying around please not a rat

this thought more  scary at that moment

than why she had been abducted

the party dress still on so carefully chosen

of only petite build was frozen!

A tin bowl was close by guessed for peeing

a bottle of water also there

numbed with fear could only sit helplessly

wondering what could happen

as the dirty mattress dipped behind her

then felt what seemed like soft fur!

A large black cat laid down by her purring

unfazed at the dank surroundings

now certain there was a person crouching

in the dark corner of the room

screamed as loudly as she could so weak

stopping when a voice did speak!

Soft so very faint it was a young female

like herself she was not alone

but almost immediately nothing there

surely it was real lord please

but no whatever it was had now gone

for her family did so long!

A further shock immediately threw her

went to look down at the cat

not there anymore never saw it move

as the dark engulfed the room

helplessness gnawed at her whole being

as things that were not there seeing!

Sound of heavy footsteps and door opening

was confronted by a tall shape

another ghost demon or just imagination

but a tight grip on her arms

knew a real human beast stood before her

placed tray on bed but did not confer!

Masked she froze petrified did not touch

appeared to check locks then left

lack of even a spoken word was too much

gasping for breath from the corner

a young girl pale long black straggly hair

came towards her with a blank stare!

Though a touch like ice it was comforting

she could feel somebody close

that stopped her going completely insane

soon falling asleep exhausted

was awoken by shouting and commotion

startled became filled with emotion!

First words heard Thank God you’re safe

as an uniformed officer came over

quickly removed from this squalid scene

after medical checks went home

her concerned parents hugging her so tight

as she recalled that awful night!

kept telling them it was the young girls help

staying close that kept her alive

at the time did not tell what they both knew

a skeleton was found another victim

had been there a long time the police had said

several more around the property laid!

Nobody believed her the girl was never found

nor this mysterious cat ever seen around!

Purring!

The cat’s purring seemed to get louder

for the first time an irritation

how quiet it had been until that moment

staring through the open window

across open fields and a dirty grey sky

his life slowly ticking by!

Almost in a dream like state became aware

of the patterns in the clouds

that drew his complete attention got up

found himself outside eyes fixed

as a large hole appeared in the formation

that lacked rational explanation!

The centre opened spiraling downwards

from within came a large craft

that hovered while the sky then cleared

just appearing before his eyes

he surveyed no noise could be heard

nothing else nearby stirred!

Cautiously walking down his long garden

it slowly moved upwards

as several small objects seemed to eject

flying in all direction so fast

ascending the clouds opened once more

this time of a wider bore!

Rising into heaven or another dimension

the alien object did transcend

that chilling sensation immersed his being

in his mind biblical passions

of death damnation fire and brimstone

at that moment fearful alone!

Retreating back inside his safe haven

upward once more glanced

there was nothing more to be seen

the familiar purring of his cat

brought sanity to a tortured perception

was there a sinister deception?

From that day his whole attitude to life changed!

Unexpected!

She had been a social worker many years

though there was more pressure

found it rewarding visiting senior citizens

concluded knocking on a door

her last visit of the week was unexpected

then no problems detected!

Remembered visiting the elderly lady before

recalling she was very frail

contact had been lost this was an urgent visit

to see if she was in distress

with no reply had a master-key to get inside

thinking she must have died!

Entering and calling the elderly person’s name

got no reply looked around

as if by instinct went into the small lounge

sensed she was in there

unprepared for the sight that would greet her

a primal fear within did stir!

She sat in a big armchair staring straight ahead

pale but appeared well

but it was several feet off the cream worn carpet

the room was cold a smell

made the social worker feel ill it was sulphur

everything after was a blur!

Awoke with a jolt as a soft voice close by spoke

shaking saw the elderly lady

who looked concerned and offering a cup of tea

the room looked normal

now in the armchair asleep a black cat did lay

quickly leaving could not stay!

From then on certain she was being followed

yet could never see anybody

her report did not reveal what she had seen

thinking she would be ridiculed

but could not forget what she had witnessed

making her feel more stressed!

It was a few days later her manager contacted

to inquire who she had seen

the lady mentioned did not live at that address

nor did anybody else

the property had been destroyed by a bad fire

an explanation did require!

Nobody was found within the burnt out shell

it was an unsolved crime

no culprit or evidence of arson had been found

flagging major concern

of course she could not give any information

causing her consternation!

Her mental health deteriorated she became ill

before long was committed

unable to accept that she imagined the event

now constantly medicated

yet still that feeling something evil was nearby

making her want to scream and cry!

Trapped in the single cell within her own hell!

Dog Walk!

It was a pleasant sunny and warm sunday

the couple were out walking

on a trail with their two labrador puppies

who were a long way ahead

chatting happily hand in hand without care

the day together did share!

Neither noticing the tree foliage thickening

or that nobody had passed

it was their weekends that they enjoyed

only just moving to the village

no knowledge of this part of the rural wood

in which they now stood!

If  they had spoken to any local in the village

maybe a different route

might have been chosen for this rest day walk

a beast that roamed here

visitors had been found badly mutilated within

was another killing about to begin?

Of course there was no warning neither knew

first hint of any trouble

the barking stopped and yelp’s of pain and fear

came from their pets ahead

then no noise could be heard only rustling trees

from calmness to unease!

A strong urge to run but not without their dogs

in turmoil heard a bark

together headed towards the faint pitiful sound

approaching saw blood and fur

there one of the pups stood over the remains

itself covered in blood stains!

Hesitant to go near being an unexpected scene

shaken by the gruesome sight

the pet snarled as if daring them to come closer

movement surrounding them

certain in the shadows something was observing

the terror increasingly disturbing!

Slowly backing away from the agitated puppy

thinking was it really a killer

a presence then showed itself coming into view

from behind a rotting tree stump

a huge black cat appeared fiery red eyes stared

and fanged teeth bared!

Claws in the ground did plough lunging forward

snatched the small dog

throwing it to one side the woman screamed

as it was flight or die

without thought through undergrowth crashed

on a rock her head bashed!

Her husband struggling to pick up her still body

as he blindly tripped on

then saw the trail once more felt the breath

of the beast on his heels

exhausted rapid heart beat clothes and skin

ripped just had to win!

In sight the edge of the tree line was visible

adrenaline drove him ever on

but exhaustion overtook him he collapsed

on the ground they lay

like discarded rag dolls sprawled in the dirt

broken and seriously hurt!

Eventually would be found yet another chapter

in the woods rural legend

but there was no clues found a major factor

for cause of injury a story without end!

The Occupant!

The house was drab with a ghoulish feel

the occupant invited her in

a rather frail lady using a walking stick

she was nervous being new

should have support from a senior nurse

but alone would have to converse!

who had been taken ill at very short notice

the patient had just come back

from convalescent home living here alone

the duty of the district nurse

was to check dressings and complications

including well-being of patients!

Though looked quite well was rather creepy

imagining her as a witch

that thought was not helped as a black cat

strolled into the large room

wanting to get on tried to see the dressing

but now had begun stressing!

What a first case to have been assigned to do

the room was extremely dingy

curtains were closed her anxiety was high

eventually the task completed

cleared up and was prepared for an exit

when the lady said why not sit?

Offered to make the nurse a tea or coffee

for showing such kindness

shaking just wanting to run then the clock

chimed loudly she jumped

making excuses turned to run and tripped

over the cat her head clipped!

Got up a trickle of blood from a small wound

ran down her now pale face

a little dizzy managed to leave glancing back

the elderly woman stood

staring out in her arms the dreaded cat

the enthusiasm had gone flat!

Walked away out of sight back to the car

blood dripped on the uniform

decided it best to return to the surgery

but then lost consciousness

awoke by her loud mobile phone tone

very cold and still alone!

A fellow nurse rang to see if she was alright

said no need visit the patient

whose address she had minutes ago left

until she saw the time

on the large man’s wristwatch she wore

it was now twelve forty-four!

She had been here over two hours asleep

not thinking it was the fall

her friend said the old lady had died

last evening at home

trying very hard not to scream aloud

in her hands head bowed!

What had she seen it was so surreal

in her interior mirror saw

the wound and track of dried blood

how her head throbbed

there was nobody at all in the street

sat firmly in the car seat!

Petrified called her boyfriend to come!

The Coin!

On a bright sunny day near the shops a teenager

became inquisitive he could see

by a drain cover something reflecting sun light

bending to pick it up was surprised

only to find that this was a coin looking like new

soon this find he would rue!

Sure he had discovered a valuable piece of treasure

put it in his pocket very pleased

walking to meet his girlfriend at a nearby store

eager to tell her of the coin

nestled in his trouser pocket that he had spotted

with her he was so besotted.

Approaching could see her ahead impatiently waiting

not looking walked into a post

doubled up on the pavement in pain being shunned

as he got up she was running

before reaching him a car swerved sharply she was hit

aghast he could not believe it!

Adrenaline began to pump around his now aching body

luckily a glancing blow shaken

got up flustered and sore apart from that seemed okay

he was sympathetic after his knock

the elderly car driver was not so lucky a heart attack

wanting to help but was pulled back!

An ambulance paramedic said the man was deceased

his girl they said should be checked

so ended up in the casualty unit just to make sure

why had this happened he mused

then remembered the coin he had recently found

was it bad luck concerned frowned.

Hours later they left nearly run down by a trolley

as it sped by with a patient

it was at that point he threw the coin on the grass

outside  that made him feel good

hand in hand they got on a bus happily together

it felt right and still nice weather.

A short time later an ambulance paramedic saw a glint

in the grass as he went by

and thought himself lucky as he picked up the coin

but immediately nearly tripped

just saving himself thought nothing of it and walked on

with no idea there was anything wrong!

Reaching his ambulance and his fellow crew member

this would be a day they would remember!
