Hand In Hand!

Held hands bewildered at what surrounded them

shocked covered in thick dust

could only hold on to each other both survived

the huge blast that killed so many

children that did not understand such carnage

or how adults had such rage!

In their short lives had only ever known destruction

warfare that took families forever

born into the putrid odours of death cries of anguish

that never ending wail of mourning

funerals and standing by grave sides of  loved ones

and choking smoke filling their lungs!

Now they were alone their home and parents murdered

as a missile struck their only sanctuary

while both outside the explosion shattered many lives

parents and grandparents a brother to

lost evermorer being so young just could not understand

as together stood hand in hand!

The Door!

There was the key he had lost some years ago

that fitted the rusting lock

belonging to the door at the top of narrow stairs

in his dead uncle’s house

that was told by him every visit never to go near

how inside wanted to peer!

Now in his thirties the warning clearly remembered

his aunt within still resided

had found the key in the uncle’s study desk draw

fear had never left him

took it home on a hook in his own kitchen placed

soon noticed it had been misplaced!

After searching for a while puzzled where it was

was distracted with other thoughts

now confronted with the keys re-appearance

renewed his long-lost fears

realising the time was here to face his own past

decided to open the door at last!

At his uncle’s house his aunt sat so frail and old

let her know he was there

then took his long dreaded steps to the door

the dust made him cough

spiders cobwebs made his blood pressure high

his childhood nightmare was nigh!

With his mind screaming to leave right away

turned the key pushed it open

an awful odour made him retch as he faltered

fumbled for a light switch

could not find one yet the wall seemed so wet

stood helpless with regret!

More use to the darkness the landing light shone

creating creepy odd shadows

he became aware of something near the window

that had been blacked out

metal bars screwed in front something slithered

sinking to the floor his strength withered!

And on top of him was a monstrous drooling freak

with a deep throaty voice spoke

welcome home brother aunty said you were coming

in the doorway she stood

glad you to have met at long last she closed the door

nothing was heard of him anymore!

His cries for help were never heard!

Summer Of Sixty One!

Rain had been forecast for the whole area

being a mountainous region

it was a guaranteed regular occurrence

their nearest neighbours

lived two miles down an old wagon trail

the ecology here frail!

As the light faded the animals under cover

on the small sheep farm

those distant rumbles of thunder heard

and streaks of lightning

it was late summer of nineteen sixty-one

the days work was done.

The family sat down for their evening meal

there were two children

a son Max of twelve and a daughter of six

who was named Jade

they were happy but becoming agitated

their fear more elevated!

For many years there had been lots of cases

of animal mutilations

even two of their own sheep and neighbours

stories of UFO’s often seen

and unknown creatures in the woods and hills

given everyone the chills!

What was going to happen next the question

that would soon be apparent

the children were never allowed to go far

though Jade was a lot younger

her brother Max loved his sister they got on

their bond truly strong!

On this night the storm skirted around them

their faithful pet and guard dog

sat quietly on the porch as they went to bed

early starts the routine

it seemed a quiet night very warm and dank

but eventually to sleep sank!

The dog was aroused from his rest around two

his long ears pricked up

an inaudible noise alerting his sensitive hearing

from the trees a gleaming light

slowly descended landing onto soft damp ground

without making any sound!

Then small beings came from within its interior

through a bluish haze

stood as if waiting two approached the main door

soon Jade came out

between the two went to the craft as if in a trance

instantly did advance!

At this point Max opened the window being alerted

to see the event happening

ran down the stairs in a panic and spiraling dread

outside watched it take off

the dog howled he loudly shouted felt helpless

in himself emotionally feckless!

Soon he was joined by their distraught parents

totally unable to comprehend

their first reaction was to frantically question

staring into the cloudy sky

he had the impression they both blamed him

heartbroken knew the future dim!

Now sixty-four sat on the porch of the same house

reflecting that dreadful night

his parents long dead did not recover from the loss

life was hard from then on

his sister was never seen again his guilt remained

still himself he blamed!

There had been searches police saturated the area

months passed rumours grew

the family was accused of killing their daughter

nobody really believed the truth

on his own how he prayed for Jades safe return

holding one of her toys he did so yearn!

Max to this very day has not given up hope!

A Stranger Now!

Anne had not seen her brother for six months

he had been keeping in touch

being a scientist had gone on a research trip

to some distant rain forest

making contact once a week by satellite phone

now his whereabouts were unknown!

On the day he was due back heard a news alert

that heavy rain in south america

had caused severe flooding in the jungle region

unable to pronounce the area

recognised it as where her brother was based

added all life had been erased!

Finding this hard to accept rang the embassy

went home to be with the family

together in mourning waited for confirmation

but after months of agony

the parents calmly waited for news of their son

what else could be done?

Half asleep on a Saturday morning the phone

rang vibrating the bedside table

she had forgotten it was in the cabinet draw

or it had any power in the battery

last time she had used it was to speak to Jack

her brother was he back?

Picked it up and hastily spoke is that you Jack

a long pause then a quite voice

yes sis I am on my way home ring you again Species

when I arrive at the airport

are you alright she enquired he said no more

something was wrong for sure!

Sounded like a stranger this could not ignore

glad he was alive but worried

told her parents he had at last been in touch

yet did not make her happy

waiting for him to call once more so unsure

there was bad news in store!

At last he called spoke in the same timid way

it did not sound like him

could she pick him up now then he had gone

before she could speak

A very cold dark night then it started to rain

began to feel the strain!

Parking was not easy too many cars no spaces

at last headed for the arrivals

the area was very busy everybody pushing

impatient for their baggage

she waited to see Jack waving and calling out

but he did not seem to be about!

It was then she heard a scream and the anger

turned to panic as crowds

started running blindly in every direction

she managed to quickly hide

behind a pillar or would have been trampled

never before this fear sampled!

Security could do nothing it emptied quickly

unable understand why

looked around spotting a lone hooded figure

she knew it was her brother

approaching backed away she followed him

not really but on a whim!

She could hear the noise behind and dogs barking

what had frightened so many

please stop you know it is me what is wrong

her voice made him stop and turn

she came up close he cowered and was crying

it felt she were prying!

Pulling back his hood Anne had to turn away

could not stop an exclamation

there was a shrivelled old man staring at her

by his eyes she knew it was Jack

more monstrous than human she was shaken

hoping she had been mistaken!

Jack came close his gnarled hands afraid to touch

his sister soft perfect skin

sitting up she wanted to know what had happened

to her handsome brother

but that chance never came a police dog attacked

he lashed out it backtracked!

He was gone he did not move like an old man

was this another species

shuddering with the knowledge it was Jack

yet what had he become

the police chased him she just sat petrified

he should have died!

Back at the car wondered where he could be

what to tell mum and dad

that would be hard they had waited patiently

how could she tell the truth

that moment of decision would delay for now

hoping it was not real somehow!

It was her brother yet a stranger now!
