True Sceptic!

A true sceptic she told everybody

got to see it to believe they are real

even when out partying was vocal

figments of people’s imaginations

brashly meaning every single word

as she boldly ranted on undeterred!

But like most with their closed minds

she found herself in a dire situation

as her boyfriends car just stopped

chugging to a halt in a small village

certain he had filled the car with fuel

she knew he remembered as a rule!

On checking the gauge showed full

why had it stopped they both said

there were no street lights anywhere

no cars passed it soon became cold

foliage in the autumn winds blew

as consternation within them grew!

Being late unable to use their phones

decided to see if there was a room

in the pub they were now outside

her brash personality was quelled

as she began to feel unnerved here

there was a strange atmosphere!

The pub was very old nobody inside

except for a man behind the bar

whom they had to make conversation

enquired about staying the night

there was a bed had a drink and meal

to her the place had an odd feel!

Asked about a phone the landlord

stared at them with a blank look

so assumed there was not one

which was odd they both thought

but tired decided to go to bed

as she was getting a fuzzy head!

There was nobody to chat to here

nobody to bore or boost her big ego

so up to a room with a roaring fire

and a quaint four-poster super bed

within having a surreal ambience

for them both a new experience!

Slept well so comfortable made love

got up no shower just a jug of water

so just had a quick wash and dressed

odd but accepted these peculiarities

had a cooked breakfast went to pay

at the plastic card stared in dismay!

Even the money was not happy to take

they eventually left on very good terms

but thought the car was still a problem

tried it thinking the engine might work

amazed it started on the first key turn

stranded no more now not a concern!

Drove away from this weird little village

and home to civilisation they were use to

tried to forget all about that night trip

until in conversation she mentioned it

in that area nobody had heard of a place

just open countryside an empty space!

Had to go to find out though reluctant

for the first time she had some doubt

about here own life long scepticism

approaching the area saw a signpost

expected to have site of this hamlet

but with a vast emptiness was met!

Her True Sceptic stance had to reassess!

Cheating!

She had no indication that he was cheating

so in love with her handsome man

been happily together more than seven years

married for just over five pure bliss

sexual relations had not noticed problems

attentive as ever the good husband

to friends she described him as so perfect

infidelity certainly did not detect!

Even when her best friend made excuses

that coincided with his work

schedule that had never arisen before

a gut feeling came into play

did not want to believe these musings

that flooded her once clear mind

but unable to shake her agitations decided

by her instincts had to be guided!

Such an awkward moment confronted him

had known him all those years

but had she really or was it all just a big lie

how shocked he said innocently

always convincing with his puppy-dog smile

that always melted her heart

began to feel guilt ridden for having doubt

to think he had put himself about!

Their first major row did not end well that night

he had gone to work early

so never saw him at breakfast received a call

her friend wanted to come around

sensed she had something needed to discuss

both sat nervously eye contact poor

when a guilty conscience could not hide the lie

no longer could the affair deny!

Her one true love had cheated living a deception

from that day knew the marriage

was over when he came home told him to leave

refused to admit he had an affair

but left quietly forever to regret losing her love

she to finished with her closes friend

three lives that changed time could not replay

each went their separate way!
