Hand In Hand!

Held hands bewildered at what surrounded them

shocked covered in thick dust

could only hold on to each other both survived

the huge blast that killed so many

children that did not understand such carnage

or how adults had such rage!

In their short lives had only ever known destruction

warfare that took families forever

born into the putrid odours of death cries of anguish

that never ending wail of mourning

funerals and standing by grave sides of  loved ones

and choking smoke filling their lungs!

Now they were alone their home and parents murdered

as a missile struck their only sanctuary

while both outside the explosion shattered many lives

parents and grandparents a brother to

lost evermorer being so young just could not understand

as together stood hand in hand!

Cliff Edge!

How could they end up on the cliff edge

she though it just another row

both moving apart surely a bad patch

until she mentioned her affair

only briefly while he worked abroad

her phone calls had ignored!

Met while young neither yet matured

but there was a special love

realising it may not save the marriage

could not change her actions

never expected to be up here pleading

as the marriage was receding!

Anguish had overtaken his whole being

drawing closer to oblivion

the cliff crumbling from beneath them

tried to hold him grip was lost

fell back onto the grass he disappeared

for a second the turmoil cleared!

Then reality hit her like a thunder bolt

the strain upon her a jolt

guilt tore her sanity completely apart

jumped with a broken heart!

Through The Arches!

Through the arches leading to open fields

the elderly man walked

slowly with his small ageing little dog

cheerful on his daily stroll

happy in his own company with his pet

normally nobody else he met!

Quite as usual on the his established route

did not see the group of lads

watching him pass with too much interest

started to follow close behind

his dog sensed them near as he growled

at this the elderly man scowled!

At the same point let his dog off the lead

near to a clump of bushes

the group of six gathered behind them

circling a younger boy

peering down at him in conversation

he listened to their oration!

Into his small hand they put a knife

he had to stab the man

as if mesmerized gripped the handle

said nothing but nodded

the elderly man sat down on a bank

from a water bottle drank.

If really he wanted to be part of the gang

kill him they kept saying

coming up stealthily behind the old man

shaking with anticipation

brought the knife down striking with force

in the neck then felt remorse!

Falling back looked up at the lad in anguish

eyes locked a barking dog

brought him back to the reality of his actions

quickly withdrawing the knife

wiped off the blood in the grass automatically

unable to let go ran erratically!

Ignoring the shouts and cheers of the gang

who ran in the opposite direction

leaving the innocent victim dying his pet

guarding him whimpering

laying next to the loyal friend now silent

he was small but defiant!

The lad who should have been at school

reached his parents house

they were both out at work he had a key

heart pounding breathless

washed blood off his small hands thinking

watching it drain without blinking!

Then as he sat in the kitchen alone cried

at twelve why had he killed

the knife was on the table in front of him

his torment now had begun

a loud knock at the door made him cower

this was his defining hour!

Watching!

On the dusty tank the soldiers stared intently

watching the shells strike

detonating onto the occupied enemy lines

as rockets and shell fire

was quickly returned in a never ending battle

creating vibration and rattle!

Each were distant from the carnage and anguish

young conscripts not hardened

warriors of  too many campaigns of aggression

again forced to protect their land

believing their cause was just without hesitation

the civilians filled with trepidation!

But as with all brutal conflicts it breeds more hate

resentment creating much bigger foe

a cycle of revenge and bloody savage retaliation

as the very young bitterly grow up

the horrors absorbed into impressionable minds

peace hopes fading behind closing blinds!

The ever mounting strife going back to long ago

hard to break historical differences

each have grievances and suspicions to tell

that seem impossible to resolve

the deaths and injuries continue to increase

can a way ever be found for peace?

My wishes always for a planet without wars!

News Years Eve!

Hundreds of thousands gathered eagerly waiting

for the new year to begin

intently watching the hands on a clock face turn

towards the midnight hour

each with their own story to tell of the past year

good and bad soon to disappear!

Drunk sober rich poor at this moment were equal

focused on the passing of time

their lives older at each stroke and second gone

some with hope others anguish

stood next to each other facing the unknown

a short lived unity shown!

That realisation that every one had the same goal

exchanging banter and hugs

problems and differences were of no importance

bitterness hatred did not exist

as the chimes began to strike the midnight hour

the massive fireworks did tower!

Like the cleansing and burning of twelve months

and their anticipation renewed

on new years eve a fresh beginning or same trek

none really knew what awaited

as the weather deteriorated together celebrated

time to cheer not be deflated!

Who knows just what mankind or nature has planned!

We can only hope it is A Happy New Year!

Remorse!

It was dark she told herself over and over

along that country lane.

And late for a meeting with a new client

poor light was a factor.

Didn’t see the walker on the road side

surely they hadn’t died!

Thought it was an animal had felt the thud

her mind was on her work.

Only just got there in time but it went well

new business for the company.

Her morning journey seemed so long ago

for the day had a lot to show.

Pleased at her success went out to celebrate

with members from her firm.

In a wine bar a television showed the news

a reporter standing in a lane.

Policemen visibly stood behind his position

said a man was in critical condition!

Sitting staring at the screen knew it was her

said a driver was being sought.

Racked with guilt made her excuses and left

and then contacted the police.

In the interview room she sat waiting alone

had she killed him still unknown!

The minutes dragged by until the officers entered

and informed her he was alive.

Explaining what had happened so emotional

not leaving the scene on purpose.

Genuine tears of remorse filled her green eyes

they knew she told no lies!

No charges were brought but was given a caution

and later went to see the victim.

From the moment they made the first contact

a bond was formed between them.

And a relationship started the anguish was gone

now their love has become strong.

Now she must stop reflecting on that date

life has strange ways of twisting our fate!
