Tunnels!

Down into the deep cold dank tunnels

the group headed to investigate

a historic fort on the rugged coastline

protecting the nation for centuries

the ominous granite walls a landmark

what waited for then in the dark?

It was to be not only their first visit

no other group had entered

since the fought had been occupied

by soldiers during the war

in the forties its last official conflict

their findings could not predict!

Down the stone steps to a bolted gate

three apprehensive men

entering felt the rush of stale cold air

hit their faces gasped to breath

keeping together moved with vigilance

they were feeling intense!

Head torches piercing the deep blackness

water dripping from above

walls slimy to touch any sound magnified

in the distance a female scream

loud shouting voices to halted progress

their enthusiasm did suppress!

Uneasy about getting lost decided to retreat

as a deep groan then vicious push

made them turn and run in a blind terror

soon back at the entrance panting

feeling safer now pondered their evidence

implications for research immense!

It had been picked up by their equipment

this reinforced their commitment!

Knew they had to go back into the tunnels!
