The Tunnel!

A few foundation stones and a railway tunnel

leading to the once thriving town

was all that remained of this lost community

then the mine was working

floods and torrential rain had taken that away

they perished in mud and clay!

Woodlands had grown over where families lived

the tunnel was all that survived

yet something lingered within the dank interior

where few ventured to come

except those intrigued by the recurring events

so frightening and intense!

In the tunnel the investigators walked through

every step enhanced ten fold

those stories they listened to and read about

the murder that had occurred

the train derailing passing through the tunnel

acting for the floods like a funnel!

A man struck from behind and fell from above

on land towering over the entrance

in the chaos nobody ever caught for the crime

it was said the place was cursed

always thought was a victim of the derailment

until to the police it was sent!

An Anonymous letter admitting guilt never traced

this added more to the mystery

how much fact or fiction they hoped to unravel

this during their short stay

the wind whistled through a sound like a stone

from above them was thrown!

The two prepared for the long nights investigation

cameras set in strategic positions

one stayed in the tunnel the other roamed woods

where many were swept away

thinking a figure would jump from behind a tree

as lights nearby she could see!

But arriving at the scene nothing was visibly there

except some kind of animal tracks

rustling from behind her became more intense

like the patter of small feet

another moving light that resembled staring eyes

was that a baby’s cries?

Unable to stay there any longer headed for base

intent on watching the pictures

being received on screens connected to these six

on the one by the tunnel entrance

she saw a shadow pass on the wall directly ahead

her partner actually saw it too

walking in the tunnel  nobody was perceived

being excited and relieved!

He thought he heard the pleading cry of a child

before arriving at their base

but that never ending wind still spiralled through

so much evidence to review

packing up the equipment both pleased to leave

a presence they could not conceive!

Driving away in the rear view mirror saw a mist rise

the tunnel seemed to disappear

shapes mingled in the dark grey swirl possibly debris

passing the faded town sign post

just as the welcoming hazy sunlight began to show

the thoughts of the night began to grow!

They were not alone an unseen entity had joined them!
