Meant To Be!

It was meant to be pleasant day away together

as the couple set off.

Cloudy at first but sunny as they arrived

at a quiet country destination.

Taking with them a rug and picnic hamper

like kids did scamper.

Losing themselves as time was not relevant

as the temperature rose.

Sat for lunch under a clump of bushes

no breeze and secluded.

It felt so good chatting there unmolested

together completely rested.

Unaware of their surroundings or the man

walking across the field.

Until he stood watching and pointing a gun

innocently they  turned.

As he fired the musket for the end prepared

jointly the moment shared!

Nothing happened before he disappeared

gathering their things fled!

Brought to an abrupt halt their path blocked

strangely dressed men waited.

A haze formed they menacingly approached

on the their sanity encroached!

Oddly there was no sound only visually vivid

overwhelming their minds!

Jumping to the left sliding down a bank

into a patch of stinging nettles.

Scrambled back up but nothing to be seen

just the track and lots of green!

Now disorientated and confused stumbled on

eventually finding their car.

Gasping for breath sitting completely dazed

a park ranger came concerned.

When they explained their awful experience

that to them was immense!

He listened carefully before telling them both

this was a sight of battles long ago!

They were two of only a few who had witnessed

the ghosts of the fallen.

Young soldiers cut down during the civil war

images lingering forever raw!

To scared to go back no words could they say

just had to get away!
