Mask!

The man stared reluctantly yet so intently

into the large wall mirror.

That image even repulsed his weary eyes

a face with no flesh!

His human mask was all that anybody saw

would this last for evermore?

His age to others always looked the same

not a decayed warrior.

Cursed by a witch a thousand years passed

for loving a king’s daughter.

Who was then sent away a prince to marry

his love would always tarry!

He had become weary of simply existing

feeling in isolation.

Killing to live devastating innocent victims

hurt him he wanted to die.

Not harm again for once he’d been a knight

enemy soldiers had to fight.

Never able to adapt to man’s changing society

without choice had coped.

Integrated into a wealthy culture being rich

allowing him his privacy.

Praying to rest surely punishment enough

becoming increasingly gruff.

But on the evening in his country house it changed

usually hunger on his mind.

Tonight an attractive woman kept looking his way

emotions long forgotten emerged.

Not since times passed had he boiled to this passion

arousal was back in fashion!

Coming closer he knew this was his long-lost love

soon she touched his arm.

How she’d come didn’t care they were together

no inhibitions bodies intertwined!

Together forged their eternal bond no longer denied

the ancient lovers quickly died!

Masks lifted turning to dust they returned to the earth!

The Foureyed Poet.
