The journey seemed to be dragging he was late
realising he should have flown.
The scenery was sparse turning to desert
as the sun began to set.
His vision obscured by such orange light
then something came into sight!
He swerved his hired car into a sandy bank
coming to a sudden stop.
Shaken but unhurt and really concerned
had somebody he hit?
Getting out he scanned the dusty highway
nothing at all was on display.
Surprised there was no damage to the vehicle
after a rest carried on.
Several miles down the road saw a hitchhiker
was not keen to pick up.
But felt it unfair to leave them stranded here
with no townships near.
Also nice to talk to somebody for a short while
she got in and said thanks.
Though there was something different about her
they chatted a little.
Her complexion did strike him as very pale
as they continued on the trail.
After an hour came to a small filling station
fuel was getting low.
The girl didn’t get out and sat in the car
filled up and went to pay.
On his return the girl was nowhere to be seen
what had happened to the teen?
Going back to ask the assistant if she’d come in
but said nobody else had entered.
Giving a description of the girl he’d given a lift
the assistant nodded knowingly.
Telling him lots of drivers had told the same tale
of a young woman strange and pale.
There was a hit and run a teenager was killed
the driver was never found.
A life that was taken so much unfulfilled
forever that road to pound!
He went on his way in disbelief she seemed so real
and sad at such a young life lost!
