That Day!

Why did we go that way still wondering

it was not the shortest route to take

just following my orders that was true

on that day no different from the rest

though it would not end in the same way

yet this was when I first wanted to pray!

Remembered vividly it was so hot and sticky

fatigue and sweat not a good combination

every joint aching from the day before

the six man unit set out on another patrol

distant gun fire could clearly be heard

nobody there uttered a single word!

A shiver ran down my own spinal cord

for the first time felt really cold

it seemed too quiet just wanted to stop

being the private I had to follow orders

within seconds intuition became reality

a blast war had claimed another fatality!

Too late now on that day my life had ended

another statistic to be added to the rest

carried by shocked comrades back to base

then home a flag draped over my coffin

many friends and family patiently waited

in my absence the point of war debated!

Now being an observer from another place

into the light a spiritual space!
