I Recall!

I remember as a lad in nineteen sixty

going to see Swindon’s last steam train

built-in the once great rail works

an exciting but sad day end of an era

‘Even Starr’ was the locos name I recall

in front of me so big I so small

looking shiny and new yet appearing old

their decision made steam had to go

simpler times plenty to keep one amused

filling your mind with awe and wonder

whichever way you wished to turn

miles of track covered the vast landscape

those huge sheds were used then in that year

Swindon’s last great loco was made here

at the local British Rail workshop

skilled men had not lost pride in their trades

in those not too distant years in history

when the world’s pace did not seem so intense

in a pre private railways and growing town

people still had time for each other then

employing a large workforce of many local men

when the many villages that surrounded it

were rural and retained their own identity!

That year my age was eleven when the last ever steam train was built-in Swindon.
